Today sees the end of Euro 2008 and that particular thread will be deleted after tonight. In it's place we'll have a brand new feature called 'The Unibond Countdown' in which we'll take a look at and have a chat about just one team a day until we've been through the whole league...
We kick off tomorrow with an exchange of views about Ashton United, and hope everyone will join in and contribute to the chat...
See you tomorrow and lets see how it goes..

Don't know about that. Ashton had an amazing run in the second half of last season, and were one of my 'dark horses' to put in a challenge this time.
However, according to the leading article in this morning's Non-League Paper, they could have a problem. Ex-Altrincham striker Marcus Hallows has initiated a court case for a £100,000 claim against Ashton and their former defender Dan White following a career-ending challenge during a Conference game in 2005. A win for Hallows could see the uninsured Mancunians in all sorts of trouble.

Typical OB, you've given us all you know on Ashton already and this feature doesn't start until tomorrow! You're always first in the queue for your pension at the post office on a Monday morning as well.

They didn't endear themselves to ETFC last season with their Manager comments that Paul Cox instructed our to centre-half 'do' their striker, bringing loads of complaints from fans that stand around the dug-outs.
They even claimed that moments later he did indeed 'do' him as he had to limp off. This despite the fact that the centre half was 6'2, blonde hair and pasty faced, yet the person that fell on their striker was a 6ft West Indian lad and wearing the number 9 shirt! Talk about making the facts fit your story.
Further comments about the state of our club/ground/pitch further inflamed the situation especially as anyone who has been to Hurst Cross will know it must be in the bottom three in the division.
With all the strengthening taking place around the league, I think Ashton will do very well to top last season's finish. They could also end up ground sharing with Curzon Ashton. Which will be an experience in sterile surrounds for you.
I can see them struggling for most of the season, will be a bottom half team.

Their manager seems quite perceptive, though.

The irony of the court case wasn't lost on us though.
OB not still bitter are you? ;D

Course I am, and it appears I'm not the only one. Didn't the Gateshead manager and others make similar comments about Mr Cox's tactics and 'ethics'? Still, with all these opponents sussing ET out - and no doubt a few more referees with their eyes open - you might have blown your best chance of promotion, at least with that particular mindset. Let's see what happens. If your new signings enable you to win without continually playing the 'no one likes us' card, I'm sure you'll be capable of acquiring points and respect in the same way that Fleetwood, Gateshead and Witton managed last time. None of which has much to do with Ashton's chances, but it made me feel better.

I can assure you that Coxy has never sent any player out to 'do' anyone. If our Secretary hadn't been in hospital over that time the club would have reported them for sure.
To be honest OB I really can't see your beef with us. The home game before Christmas at Coro Park was a good game played in difficult conditions, which we edged in the last minute. The cup game at your place was voted the best game of the season at Nethermoor on this forum. The only game I have never heard you complain about was they home game back in Sept but then again you won that one. ;D
I can't remember Ian Bogie saying anything bad against us however Jim Vince did praise us as the only team to go to Witton and try and outplay them (stupid idea they beat us!!).

I can only quote from my post from March 2nd this year which mentions a report of the UPL's lead game that appeared, as I recall, under a somewhat uncomplimentary banner headline. I don't keep my old copies of the NLP, as we need to reserve space for my jars of toenail clippings and assorted bodily fluids.
""...But I was very disappointed with the match officials. While Eastwood defended well they took every opportunity to feign injury and wind down the clock."
- Gateshead Manager Ian Bogie, quoted in the Non-League Paper, after their 1-1 draw yesterday. Gateshead scored a disputed equaliser in the third minute of 'injury' time."
With regard to our League encounter at Nethermoor, bigj's report has disappeared from the website but it was, I seem to remember, an even game that was pinched 1-0 by Guiseley midway through the second half. At no time did Eastwood attempt to defend a lead by means of time wasting, feigning injury or bending the Laws.
Anyway, I'm as fed up with writing this stuff as no doubt you (and the rest of the Forum members) are with reading it. I promise not to whinge on any more about past events (although I might have to lock myself under the stairs when this Topic reaches 'E') and promise that in future I will approach Eastwood Town and all who sail in her with no preconceptions and my customary even-handed bonhomie.
Night night.
