Okay, this should probably go in the 'Reserves' thread, but bear with me.
Q: What connects this Guiseley team?
Dickinson; Swift, Ellis, M Noble, Agus; Walters, Rickers, Pugh, Thornton; Wilford, Greaves. Add Adam Wilson, Brice Tiani and Matty Larkins, though I'm not sure what their status is at the moment.
A1: They're all useful players, with experience at Unibond level or above.
A2: None of them started in the 5-1 drubbing of Ossett Town on Tuesday.
Steve Kittrick was brought to this club with the brief of getting Guiseley into the Blue Square North for next season, and he has brought in a host of new players, giving us the biggest first-team squad I can ever recall. Between now and the end of March we face nine League games, two each week. During that time we're going to suffer injuries, illnesses, suspensions, unavailabilities and possibly recalled loans. We need to have viable options for every position, so that there's no need to switch the entire team about to cover absences. The players who come in need to be involved, match fit and sharp.
The match report on the website says the inclusion of six recent signings 'didn't work' and the Reserves went out of their Cup. I wasn't at the game, so I can't comment on the standard of play. But with all due respect to the competition and the displaced regulars, we'll only discover whether the selection policy 'worked' when we get to May.

Ads, mate...We keep winning. He must be doing something right! If we can get one of the Management to buy you some pie and chips and peas will you start being friends with 'em just for the sake of club unity? Come on, mate; you're the only grump who's not enjoying the party at the moment... .

OB states that there 13 players not playing first team who should be in the reserves , to keep their fitness levels up . So what do the existing reserves do ---- go home and watch \tv no they will find other clubs , Danny Forest for example. The reserves should be bringing the young players through Danny Husband springs to mind ,players who have come through the age levels and now are one step away from the first team, Lose this type of player and the rest of the youth side will not see someone to look up to , and see what they can achieve with hard work and not a little skill. Please do not take this the wrong way OB its just my view of things at this moment . thanks PTF.

I'm not suggesting that all thirteen 'extras' should turn out in the Reserves every game, only that it's a valid tactic to use Reserve matches as a vehicle to provide match practice for players currently able to step up without having to be 'nursed' through the battlefield of a promotion campaign.
This season isn't a rehearsal. As I've said before, we've got to throw everything at getting out of the Unibond this time - next season's Premier Division looks like it'll be even tougher - and a big part of that is carrying (and juggling) a well-stocked and experienced first team squad.
The function of a Reserve side this high up the Pyramid must always be to serve the needs of the first team; winning trophies and even matches must be secondary. That isn't to say that cream shouldn't be allowed to rise (Craig Hall's the classic example) but it's rare that more than a couple of lads from any set of Reserves prove themselves at first team level.
Over the years, we've lost quite a few youngsters who've moved on citing lack of opportunity, but how many can you name who've gone on to establish themselves elsewhere at Unibond Premier level or above? Management aren't stupid; everyone wants to unearth a diamond or two, but picking reserves who aren't ready for the first team isn't fair on either the team or the player.
Promotion for the first team would ensure that the club is more attractive to the best of local talent, and so it goes on. Let's just ensure we do it.

Good points OB a mix of the best young talant and top fringe players is ideal --- If we could keep them together.

first team always comes first and the reserves are there to back them up when needed , thats a fact of football no sentiment can be allowed if you want to succeed , as harsh as that might seem to some its the correct way
