While I agree that yesterday was very poor, it is only a week or so since we put in a superb performance at South Shields. A worrying defeat, yes, but not time for despair yet. We urgently need cover for Luke Dean. It didn't work putting Ethan Vaughan in there and he was transformed when he went back out right for the last 20/25.

South Shields was one of the two matches I wasn’t present at this season so I cant comment on the performance - just note that we lost. I thought we were excellent in spells against Marske and created enough chances to have won several matches - but we lost. Better to play well and lose than play badly and lose but ultimately it’s about finding ways to win. I recall many ‘encouraging’ performances last season and we all know how that ended.

Indeed so, CDP, and I am aware that I made some 'let's not despair' comments last season, before ending up ... in despair. I will tone down my positive comments until there is something to be positive about

Should probably start by acknowledging that there were four or five players who would have expected to start the match yesterday who were missing through a combination of injury and ineligibility so we were handicapped by that. That said, I cannot recall ever witnessing a more utterly inept performance from a Guiseley team, particularly in the first half, although the second wasn’t much of an improvement. I made the trip to Blyth believing Guiseley would have a decent chance against a team in the lower reaches of the NLN but in truth Blyth will not have an easier win all season. In the first half we managed one corner, in the first couple of minutes and not a single effort on goal. Second half was a bit better and some chances were created but we deserved nothing from the game overall. I would estimate that Blyth had 75 per cent of the possession and territorial advantage throughout. When we had possession it was inevitably given up cheaply, either by a limp tackle, a wayward pass or by lumping the ball up field towards a hopelessly isolated Cassidy always seemed to be at least 20 yards from another Guiseley player. It’s very hard to do well in any football match when you don’t have the ball and our inability to get, keep and then use the ball effectively is really hurting us in games. The back four played reasonably well but when under pressure for most of the game were bound to concede eventually and with steadier finishing Blyth could and should have won by four or five goals. Luke Dean is a huge miss as he is a ball winner in midfield. Cadman looks good but needs help around him. The wide men need the ball, otherwise they cant influence the game. Cassidy needs help alongside him, otherwise he cant influence the game. My pre season optimism has now evaporated having witnessed eight of our ten matches this season. We have played ok in spells but not dominated other teams in a way the better teams do. We don’t score enough goals (failed to score in four out of ten matches and scored more than one in only three matches). We aren’t clinical enough in front of goal. We don’t do the basics around keeping possession and moving the ball around well enough. We lack intensity at times, especially it seems in the first half of games and we don’t have a settled line up or formation which is partly down to player availability. All of this has worrying parallels with last season. We have lost the last three matches and won only one of the last five and the players look low on confidence to me. Three challenging league matches coming up in the next nine days. We need a couple of decent results and performances at least to get our season back on track, otherwise I fear it will be a tough winter looking towards the bottom of the league rather than the top. Sadly that is a pretty fair summary of where we are. Talk of new blood in Danny Fs post match interview. Whilst it may be needed lets hope that doesn’t lead to yet more major chopping and changing. I think injuries have allowed us to be blown off course and we need to go back to preseason lineup and formation. I think we are seeing the importance of having a squad and not just an 11,we desperately need another centre mid player, preferably an 8 who can chip in with a few goals,Cassidy has looked very isolated last couple of games,we saw this with our strikers last season, the modern way is to play with a 10 behind who will support, not sure we have a player with that quality, maybe just revert to 2 up top, surely Haw or a striker in on loan could play off Cassidy and lessen his work load
