A good team would’ve beaten us but thankfully they were very poor. Two well taken goals is encouraging. Still look ropey at the back but Brad looked more like his usual self.

Lge: Guiseley 2 v Basford 1 Sat. 19/08/23
Well, it’s often said “A win’s a win.” (usually in less than convincing circumstances!) True, it was good to get our first three points and first win of 2023/24, but the Lions made heavy weather of things, against a team that looked game and energetic but possessed on this evidence, little cutting edge or creativity. There were two excellent Lions’ goals though. Tom Denton gave a good overall performance and stayed on the park for much more of the match than he has at times. In the first half he scored with a downwards-header, which ricocheted off the ground and flashed past the keeper into the net, to give the Lions the lead. Then, in the second half it was his challenge to a Basford player, that led to the ball breaking to Gabriel Johnson for a well-finished low strike to the corner of the net. There was an unfortunate injury to a Basford player previous to that Lions’ second goal (that I missed!) but it led to a long stoppage of play as medical attention was dispensed which sadly led to the injured player being stretchered off the field. A sporting round of applause was given by most. (Hope it was not too serious in the end and he’s okay!) Kallum Murphy replaced Tom Denton (as we’ve got used to) in the closing stages, but before TD had arrived at the home dug-out (by having to walk all the way round from the other side of the pitch), the ball was in the Guiseley net for a late away goal. The small Basford group of fans were at last given something to cheer, although they’d done their best previously though intermittently. With a larger than normal amount of added time expected because of the treatment to their injured player, Basford were maybe briefly given a boost. But Guiseley saw out what amounted to just over seven extra minutes of play, though this seemed in the circumstances, somewhat short of the actual amount of injury time. The crowd (435-21 away) seemed poor, on a lovely, sunny summer’s afternoon but perhaps some regular Lions’ fans are on their hols!

Second half they were okay but I felt Denton's goal was very harsh on Basford who far the better side first half. The ball was staying on the floor much more than against Whitby which was a relief. Essel didn't impress much but Gabriel caused them all sorts of problems when he came on. Hope that he doesn't spend much more time on the bench.

It seems striker Edwin Essel (who played and was subbed today) has signed for the Lions from Grimsby on a month’s loan deal. A month?!!

From Basford site: “Striker Jonathan Wafula suffered a dislocated shoulder and full fracture of his collar bone, in an innocuous collision with Guiseley defender Leigh Whelan…he went to a Leeds hospital where he will stay overnight…thanks to all at Guiseley for their excellent assistance throughout.”
That’s awful news.
Very best wishes from me to the player in his recovery!

After the shambles on Tuesday evening, things marginally improved this afternoon. I don't know if Basford have a reputation as a niggly side, but Guiseley were seemingly equally willing to get their retaliation in first. Guiseley's defence again looked too porous and easily disassembled on occasion. CMW is notably missed, not only for his silky passing prowess, but his intimidating presence and ability to organise the defence. The midfield were not particularly memorable. I think a better option to make the best use of Denton's head is to link him up with Johnson and Murphy. Both are busy, bustling players, constantly on the move - the sort that defenders have nightmares about. They could not only be feeding Denton, but feeding off him. Just a thought.

A nice win to seal three points in our first Saturday home game of the season. First I must say a big thank you to everyone for today's lovely tribute to my Dad, it was a really emotional minute's applause and we are extremely proud of my Dad and miss him greatly. As commented above Basford fought hard all game but Brad Wade had little to do in goal as the visitors were often wasteful with their opportunities. The first half was fairly even but it was Denton's header which separated the two sides at the break. The big striker headed Chippendale's cross into the next to break the deadlock with ten minutes left of the half. We came close to scoring a couple of minutes before when a shot was somehow cleared off of the line. Ollie Brown had to make a last ditch challenge in the closing minutes of the half to stop a good chance for Basford on the counter. We made a change a couple of minutes into the second half introducing Tuesday night's Man of the Match Gabriel Johnson in place of new signing Edwin Essel. It seemed to have a desired affect when Chippendale was so unlucky not to double our lead when his ferocious shot cannoned off of the post. The second half was then disrupted by a lengthy delay with Jonathan Wafula going down injured after a clash between him and Leigh Whelan. Our former striker had to be stretchered off, best wishes to Jonathan for a speedy recovery! It wasn't long after that that it was 2-0 when Johnson slotted past the visiting keeper who had dashed off his line after a long ball forward found the substitute. The Lions' 2-0 lead didn't last for long though and Ethan Cartwright hauled Basford back into the contest with a header four minutes later. It proved to be the last action of the game to seal our first win of the season. Well played Guiseley! Onto a trip to Gainsborough on Tuesday night. Come on Guiseley! AB

First and foremost a heartfelt tribute was paid to John Bridson before the game.
The game itself was largely scrappy and as Paul Phillips said we arguably played better against Whitby.
But 3 points papers over a workmanlike performance and we’re grateful for that.
Both home games have suggested a vulnerability at the back that wasn’t evident preseason.
Tongue is playing too far back for me too.
It could be a season of grinding out results but it’s early days and we may yet find the flair to really dominate teams.

One thing is certain. When Courtney MW returns that defence WILL improve. Of that there is no doubt. Ible and MW are our best central defensive pairing and very reliable.

Thought we did ok against a dogged Basford side. Once we get a couple of players back and we get a settled side we will see a change in style. Thought the tribute to John was fitting and very emotional and well observed by all. Onwards and upwards.
