As my nom de plume perhaps reveals, my favourite players have always been wingers and it’s sad to think most of the greatest wingers belong in the past Ie ‘yesterday’. I have seen quite a number at games attended too over the years eg George Best, Willie Morgan (Manchester United) Eddie Gray, Arthur Graham (Leeds United), Peter Beagrie, Chris Waddle (Bradford City). There was also the great John Barnes (Liverpool) though I never went to a match and saw him. But, nowadays, the position can be a rarity, with modern formations. Yet, what is more exciting than seeing a rampaging ‘outside right or left’ in full flight taking on defenders in 1:1 ‘combat’ with dribbling skills and other trickery?
At Guiseley today, we are fortunate to have Lewis Whittam who is doing a lot of damage to opposing sides with this direct approach, where the player doing it really puts themselves on the line and either looks very good or …very foolish. How much easier is it to make a pass, when approached by an opponent, rather than depend on your own ball skills (if you’ve got them of course-many wearers of nos. 7 and 11 don’t!) (NB: I greatly admired John Johnston earlier in the season too and was sorry to see him depart!) But, the winger has become something of an endangered ‘species’ and is actually ‘extinct’ in certain teams!
But, that’s the type of player I like to see wearing those shirt numbers. One plea- give Courtney Meppen-Walters a no. 4, 5 or 6 please! To me, a defender should NEVER be wearing no. 11! It breaks my heart to see it-though I love Courtney’s defensive abilities and he has been and is, a great asset to the current team! Keep it up (the field-pun intended) CM-W! “Every team should have at least one (but I’d always prefer two) winger(s)!”
