I first started watching Guiseley in 1966, and although I've had many a season off since then, and can't really consider myself as much of an 'all time regular' as certain others, I still have some memories of our opponents down through the years.
I thought it might be an idea to try to remember the teams and opponents from as far back as anyone can remember, so some of the teams I remember from then are listed below in no paticular order whatsoever...
Fryston Colliery (played in a kit a bit like Villa's, I seem to remember)...
Snydale Road Athletic (played in all red)
Salts (from Saltaire)
Yorkshire Amateurs?
East End Park (played in green and white hoops the same as Celtic)
DP & E (from Otley. The first team I ever saw in an orange kit, and it amazed me!)
Methley (United?)
Micklefield Utd
Monckton Collieries
Ardsley Celtic
Thackley..and many more....
We moved into the Yorkshire League in the very early 70's and some of the newer teams I remember from that time include the teams I've listed here:
Hull Brunswick
Hall Road Rangers
Denaby United
Rawmarsh Athletic
Skegness Town (our very first oponents when we joined the Yorkshire League, and we handed out a 6-0 drubbing at Fort Nethermoor that day!)
Bridlington Town
Bridlington Trinity
Leeds Ashley Road (Whatever happened to them?)
Harrogate Town
Harrogate Railway
Dinninghton Atletic
Arnold
Denaby United
Mexborough Town
I think we won the Wharfedale Challenge Cup about 9 0r 10 seasons in a row and I remember one season when beat either DP & E or Burley Trojans 10-0 in the Semi Final in the days of Mick Stocks and Marsden Claughton, Peter Trimnell, Roger Wilkinson and Les Wood.
Shaw Lane Sports and Social Club were pretty regular cup opponents then as were Baildon Rovers, Baildon Town and, of course, Yeadon Celtic. These, in fact, were the very first opponents I saw in my very first Guiseley game. It was November 1966 and the Semi-Final of the Wharfedale Challenge Cup. Fort Nethermoor was packed and Celtic led 3-1 at half time, Guiseley got it back to 3-3 just before full time and then ran riot in extra time to completely hammer them 7-3. Incidentally, my second ever Guiseley match the following Saturday saw them beaten 7-3 at Queensbury Youth in some other sort of Cup game, and I think it felt like the coldest and most desolate place on earth on that particular afternoon....
