Hello and welcome to the 18th edition of my weekly blog.
As we are round about half way through the 2008/09 football calendar, I felt it appropriate to conduct a half-season review of sorts.
So in no particular order of importance, here are the ADAMBRID PICKS OF THE SIX months so far.
“ADAMBRID PICK OF THE SIX” BEST RESULT OF THE SEASON SO FAR
ILKESTON 0 -1 GUISELEY (UNIBOND PREMIER DIVISION)
SATURDAY 4 OCTOBER 2008
There seemed to be no stopping table toppers Ilkeston at this point.
The all conquering Derbyshire outfit had, on their own patch, notched 1-0 victories against Frickley and North Ferriby before crunching Matlock 4-1.
Then Guiseley, also on a great run themselves, visited the New Manor.
A great display saw us secure an impressive 1-0 nil victory, secured by a Steve Burton goal.
The result left Guiseleyites everywhere thinking that maybe, just maybe, this would be the season they won promotion.
We’re still on track for that going to press.
“ADAMBRID PICK OF THE SIX” WORST RESULT OF THE SEASON SO FAR
GUISELEY 3 – 3 SHEFFIELD FC (FA CUP THIRD QUALIFYING ROUND)
SATURDAY 11 OCTOBER 2008
Amazingly, my pick for worst result of the season so far comes just a week after what I believe was our best result of the season so far.
Buoyed by the confidence of the win at the league leaders and a midweek point at Matlock, you can’t blame Guiseley fans for expecting their team to turn over their local rivals in the FA Cup.
This expectation was increased when we led 3-0 at half time and seemed unstoppable.
But just before the 45 minute whistle, Simeon Bambrook was sent off and Sheffield went on to pull three goals back to tie the game.
They defeated Guiseley 2-1 in the replay and booked themselves a match with Conference North side Blyth Spartans, one in which Guiseley may have excelled.
“ADAMBRID PICK OF THE SIX” GOAL OF THE SEASON SO FAR
SIMEON BAMBROOK – HALFWAY LINE SCREAMER AGAINST OSSETT TOWN
GUISELEY 3 – 4 OSSETT TOWN (WEST RIDING COUNTY CUP)
TUESDAY 23 DECEMBER 2008
The Gladiator entrant came up with a stunner in the West Riding County Cup loss to Ossett.
Bambrook seemed to take one look at the goalkeeper, who stood off his line, before unleashing a powerful, looping shot from the half way line in to the top corner.
May be Simeon’s emulating David Beckham but there’s no way AC Milan are getting their hands on him!
Although we lost the match and bowed out of the cup concerned, the game was memorable for this stunning goal and “AdamBrid’s Pick of the Six Incident of the Season So Far” award winner...
“ADAMBRID PICK OF THE SIX” INCIDENT OF THE SEASON SO FAR
KITTERICK FLIPS
GUISELEY 3 – 4 OSSETT TOWN (WEST RIDING COUNTY CUP)
TUESDAY 23 DECEMBER 2008
There was only ever going to be one winner of this award.
I have never seen anything like it. BrotherBrid might write a novel about it.
After a supporter loudly criticised Steve Kitterick’s managerial credentials by yelling “How bad does it have to get Kitterick?” following Ossett’s equalising goal, the Guiseley boss motioned for him to take to the dugout.
But as the fourth and match winning goal was scored, more angry words were exchanged before Kitterick ran round half the pitch to confront the fan.
They would probably have come to blows if chairman Phil Rogerson had not stepped in to separate the pair.
If you weren’t there, you missed Nethermoor history.
“ADAMBRID PICK OF THE SIX” MOST IMPROVED PLAYER OF THE SEASON SO FAR – PIOTR SKIBA
In my opinion, Skiba made a lot of mistakes last season and sometimes cost us matches.
But this season, the goalkeeper has been totally the opposite.
He has made some breathtaking saves and always looked sharp between the sticks.
I will always remember his stunning double save against the Bradford attack on Boxing Day as though we went on to lose this derby clash, he showed top notch commitment to the cause.
I am now confident that with Skiba in goal, Guiseley have every chance of getting a good result and notching an all important decent goal difference.
“ADAMBRID PICK OF THE SIX” NEEDS TO BUCKLE UP AWARD – LEE PUGH
Every time I’ve seen this midfielder play, he has failed to string more than several passes together.
He always seems off the pace and it’s no wonder he doesn’t start many games.
I think Pughie needs to buckle up and play better so that he is considered for the starting 11 each and every week.
He can be a useful player but needs to improve to achieve this.
I hope you’ve enjoyed my half-season review.
Next week I will surprise you all by writing about a random Guiseley related topic!
