Hello and welcome to this milestone 20th edition of my weekly blog.
I have reported on plenty of different aspects of Guiseley over the past five months, covering everything from the recent credit crunch to what I’d like to see at Nethermoor.
What follows is a look back at my favourite blogs.
PICK ONE – A SPECIAL TWO PARTER
In the 8th issue, I picked out my favourite Guiseley players from the present and asked my family about past Nethermoor greats.
I enjoyed finding out about the history of the club and getting to know more about the players through research.
Here is a quick excerpt:
FATHERBRID’S CHOICE
Vince Brockie
“Brockie was a passionate player who always gave 110% every game. There has never been a midfielder like it since. I hope one day he manages the first team because he will get them playing better than they are now. I don’t think he came back just to manage the reserves. He’s there for one reason and one reason only: to manage the first team.”
BROTHERBRID’S CHOICE
Geoff Horsfield
“From the get go you could tell this striker was a peg above the rest. Horsfield netted countless times for Guiseley and it was no surprise he eventually attracted the interest of Premiership clubs. Horsfield, then a DIY man of sorts, was a class act who always gave his all for the side. As a little child, I found Geoff a pleasure to watch and some of his 30 plus goals during the 1994/95 season still remain in my memory.”
PICK TWO – THE CREDIT CRUNCH
This was a really interesting thing to write about especially in the current poor financial climate.
I wish the club didn’t have to be one of the many infrastructures suffering but felt it necessary to say something about it.
Here’s a little look back at the blog itself:
CLUBS MAY FLOCK TO NETHERMOOR SALES
The player departures have already started with Tom Morgan, Brice Tiani, Alex Callery, John Douglas and David Wood abruptly leaving.
It has also been speculated that Sunday League football rebel Mark Whitehouse was shunned because of the situation.
If the players were allowed to leave for little or no fees to cut back on the club budget, who’s to say league rivals will not continue to pick up Guiseley bargains?
We could well be short on a midfield with so many players going.
If the squad continues to be cut apart then our chances of promotion will disappear quicker than stock on Woolworths shelves (another victim of the crunch).
PICK THREE – HALF SEASON REVIEW
The week before my credit crunch assessment, I looked back at the season so far by picking out the best and worse results, goal, incident, most improved player and player who needs to buckle up.
It was good to look back over an eventful six months and reflect on the state of the club at this point.
Here is one of the awards I gave out:
“ADAMBRID PICK OF THE SIX” INCIDENT OF THE SEASON SO FAR
KITTERICK FLIPS
GUISELEY 3 – 4 OSSETT TOWN (WEST RIDING COUNTY CUP)
TUESDAY 23 DECEMBER 2008
There was only ever going to be one winner of this award.
I have never seen anything like it. BrotherBrid might write a novel about it.
After a supporter loudly criticised Steve Kitterick’s managerial credentials by yelling “How bad does it have to get Kitterick?” following Ossett’s equalising goal, the Guiseley boss motioned for him to take to the dugout.
But as the fourth and match winning goal was scored, more angry words were exchanged before Kitterick ran round half the pitch to confront the fan.
They would probably have come to blows if chairman Phil Rogerson had not stepped in to separate the pair.
If you weren’t there, you missed Nethermoor history.
Next week I will hopefully be able to review at least one of the first team’s first home games this year.
