Hello and welcome to the 21st edition of my weekly blog.
This week I’m glad to report I can finally review some football at Nethermoor as we took on Ossett Town in the league on Saturday and Ashton in the Unibond Challenge Cup on Tuesday night.
Both games produced quite differing results and what follows are my thoughts on each match.
OSSETT WIN IN ONE NIL BORE
GUISELEY 0 – 1 OSSETT TOWN
SATURDAY 24 JANUARY 2009
We just weren’t at the races on Saturday in a local derby match you thought we’d have been up for.
The game was hardly a positive advert for non league football. Ossett notched an easy goal in the 11th minute and from there on the match descended in to the doldrums.
The away side were far sharper and clinical. To be honest, they could have won by five or six had they taken their chances.
We didn’t show the will or desire needed to get back in the game and eventually suffered the consequences with a defeat.
The atmosphere and exchanges between Guiseley and Ossett representatives following the game showed how fiery it was but also highlighted our frustration.
I wasn’t surprised that the attendance on Tuesday night didn’t even reach three figures but it was great to finally break our winless run with a cup victory...
ASHTON SHIVER IN GUISELEY GOAL FLURRY
GUISELEY 3 – 0 ASHTON UNITED
TUESDAY 27 JANUARY 2009
Following the poor defeat the previous Saturday it was not surprising to find only 99 fans attended Nethermoor for this cup tie.
But Guiseley secured a solid home victory with Thompson and Brown goals and an Anthony Lloyd penalty.
We created lots more chances in the first 15 minutes of this match than we did in the entire Saturday encounter.
Guiseley played some decent free flowing football once they got in to their stride and looked like a team determined to win.
Ashton had not long provided stiff competition in the league but we put them to the sword in a match which will bring heaps of confidence to the side.
With transfer deadline day approaching by the time next Friday rolls around, in my next blog I will look at some of the big stories hitting the headlines.
