Hello and welcome to the 27th edition of my weekly blog.
This week, I am assessing our chances of lifting the Unibond League Cup trophy having seen off Skelmersdale United in the semi final on Tuesday night at Nethermoor.
We now face an Ilkeston side who sit third in the Unibond League but surely in the cup form counts for nothing?
SKEM DEMOLITION LIFTS CONFIDENCE
Guiseley’s 5-0 hammering of the Merseysiders will give the team impetus going in to the final having come off the back of a poor league loss at Buxton.
We worked hard for a convincing win over our First Division North opponents and showed the home crowd that we want to win this trophy.
There is no reason why we cannot replicate that performance in the final and go on to lift the trophy.
If we can reproduce this performance against league opposition in the coming matches and bring it in to the final, we have every chance of adding silverware to the Nethermoor cabinets.
The Lions have often done well against opposition higher in the league this season so going up against Ilkeston will pose no new challenges for a side hunting the play offs.
ILKESTON WIN SHOWS WE CAN DO IT
Guiseley have come up once before against Ilkeston this season when a Steve Burton goal saw us defeat this hard to beat team away from home.
Although this was early on in the season, it shows we can get a result against Town and highlights that we can get the right result in the final if we adopt the same winning mentality.
The game will not be easy but it’s worth baring in mind Ilkeston have only found the net in the league some 40 times, a lot less than their rivals.
Yet as was noted at the top of this blog, league form counts for nothing in the cups.
But if we can take advantage of this goal shy side and look to attack early there is no reason why we cannot win the match and trophy.
SILVERWARE BOOST
What finer way for Guiseley to cap off what has been a slightly indifferent season with a trophy?
The players will be motivated by the opportunity to lift a cup having seen their fortunes stutter slightly in the league by falling behind in the play-off race.
Defeating not only a fellow Premier Division outfit but one that currently sit higher in the league for the honour would make victory even sweeter.
Everything could well be set for Guiseley to triumph in this competition having excelled in the semi final and the motivation factor is definitely there.
Let’s hope we can do it.
Next week, I will look in to another random Guiseley topic.
