Hello and welcome to the 28th edition of my weekly blog.
This week, I feel it is only fitting to focus on our poor performance on Tuesday night against a mid-table Frickley Athletic outfit who made mince meat of us.
The score line may read ‘Guiseley 2-3’ but Frickley were three nil ahead until the final two minutes of the ninety.
I’m going to give you my opinion of the game and point out where I feel we need to improve to ensure we can have a shout of making the play offs.
FRICKLEY FILL BOOTS
The game itself, bar the 88th minute onwards, was a bore in that it turned in to a hoof ball match where both sides bashed the ball forward in an effort to score.
This left both home and away fans bemused and wondering why they bothered parting with their cash on a nippy night.
The difference between Guiseley and the away side was that Frickley took their chances in front of goal whereas Guiseley wasted them.
Our front line were presented with more than several opportunities but they often declined to shoot or hit them way wide of the mark.
It was only when James Hanson netted in the 88th minute that we made a significant threat.
When Anthony Lloyd confidently tucked away a penalty a minute later an audacious comeback looked on but Guiseley couldn’t take advantage of the added time given to them.
My review of this game couldn’t pass without a mention of the referee.
He sent off a man from each side following a multi man brawl but should arguably have dismissed Frickley’s Jonathan Groome much earlier for persistent fouling.
In the end, Guiseley were left to rue yet another chance to make up ground as we push for the play offs.
IMPROVEMENT NEEDED
Many of Guiseley’s problems this season lie in forgetting the basics like passing properly, taking good corners and free kicks and making the most of chances.
Against Frickley and other teams this season, our failure to play a bit of football and take the game to the opposition has cost us vital points.
Instead, we let them come at us and you often forget who’s playing at home if we do this on our own patch.
The cry of ‘get it on the floor Guiseley’ has grown increasingly popular at Nethermoor this season. It’s no surprise home fans get frustrated with our style of play sometimes.
Guiseley must also look to defeat teams mid table and below on a regular basis as too often this season we have struggled against them.
The defeat against Frickley followed losses to the likes of Ossett Town and Cammell Laird this season.
It’s strange that we have got fantastic results against those in and around us in the league like Ilkeston Town, Eastwood Town and North Ferriby United to name a few.
In order to progress up the league we need consistency as without it other teams will gladly take advantage and climb the table instead.
That does it for this week folks, next week I will preview the clash with Hednesford and reflect on our busy week.
