Hello and welcome to the 29th edition of my weekly blog.
This week I am both taking a look back at our busy League schedule and looking ahead to a tough encounter with play-off rivals Hednesford Town.
GUISELEY TAME THE LEADING BADGERS AND SHATTER THEIR HOME LEAGUE RECORD
EASTWOOD TOWN 1 – 3 GUISELEY
TUESDAY 24 MARCH 2009
Well what a result this was.
Guiseley fans, who have watched their side struggle and toil against lower league opposition at Nethermoor recently, marvelled in this fantastic victory.
Along with the three points Guiseley claimed the scalp of showing Eastwood what defeat tastes like on their home soil in the league for the first time this season.
The high flying league leaders, who are seemingly favourites for the Unibond League title, were cast aside by a solid Guiseley outfit that put in a tremendous performance.
Three second half goals from Muller, Crossley and Hanson saw off Eastwood on their own patch.
The only reply the hosts offered came through a very late Andrew Todd goal.
This result brought the side impetus and confidence going in to a home league clash with our League Cup Final opponents Ilkeston Town...
LATE PENALTY RESCUES THE LIONS
GUISELEY 1 – 1 ILKESTON TOWN 1
THURSDAY 26 MARCH 2009
It’s the same old story time and again this season.
Our boys go away from home, bring back a more than well earned three points and struggle badly against their next home opponents.
Guiseley didn’t take their chances against a resurgent Ilkeston side who took the lead five minutes before the break through a dipping Paul Hurst shot.
The home side created a number of chances and tried valiantly to break down their opponents but miscued passes and poor long balls let them down.
Granted, we should have had a penalty when Walshaw was hauled to the ground about halfway through the second half but there can be no excuses for wasting other chances.
It took a 94th minute Anthony Lloyd spot kick to restore parity to a game we should otherwise have won.
There are certainly areas we need to improve upon to ensure we see off Hednesford on Saturday...
PASSING, THROWING AND TAKING
For me, Guiseley need to once again go back to basics in their quest to stamp their authority on the play-off zone.
Too often against Ilkeston we resorted to smashing the ball forward in hope our attackers would find it and take on the resilient defence.
We need to be much more accurate with our passing, particularly when going forward.
When you’re 1-0 down at home, you cannot afford to waste valuable time deciding who’s going to take a throw in.
On at least several occasions on Thursday night, Guiseley had chances to spearhead an attack by launching a quick throw in.
Instead we dilly-dallied by giving someone else the ball for a throw in and by the time that was done, the away defence were in position.
Finally, Guiseley must simply take their chances when they are presented with them.
Our front line were in shooting positions throughout the game against Ilkeston but they did not go for the jugular and have a go at goal.
Instead we twisted and turned in the penalty area until we lost the ball, hit wayward crosses or shot for goal like we were playing rugby.
Against Hednesford, we must look to correct all these errors and take the game to our opponents by playing good football as well as both creating and taking chances.
If we do all those things, we can win and bolster our play-off chances tremendously.
Next week I have the privilege of previewing the League Cup Final between Guiseley and Ilkeston Town on April 7 at Curzon Ashton.
