Hello and welcome to the 31st edition of my weekly blog.
There usually would have only been one thing to talk about this week but instead there are two...
...GUISELEY ARE LEAGUE CUP WINNERS!...and...
...WE WON 6-0 AT HOME!
We saw off Ilkeston Town 3-2 with a couple of late, late goals from James Cotterill and Adam Muller in the League Cup final at Curzon Ashton.
Just three days later we stuffed Worksop Town 6-0 at home at could easily have had more.
What follows is my review of the amazing Cup Final display on Tuesday night and our rampant home performance yesterday.
DOUR FIRST 45/ELECTRIC FINAL 75 MINUTES
From an entertainment perspective, the opening half offered little in the way of chances for either side.
Instead it resembled more of a midfield battle with both teams refusing to open up and keeping a tight defensive rearguard in place.
But the half time drinks and oranges must have made a difference as the action went end to end and it was a wonder it was 0-0 at the full time whistle.
Having stormed the Ilkeston goal and come within inches of scoring on more than several occasions, Guiseley fans feared Town would get one golden opportunity to finish the match in extra time.
Indeed Ilkeston came out of the blocks in extra time and took the lead through a Ben Heath penalty following Skiba’s untidy lunge on an attacker.
But Guiseley didn’t give up that easily. Instead ten minutes later, an otherwise quiet Simeon Bambrook unleashed a stunning shot in to the far corner to equalise.
When Ilkeston went ahead once more in the last few minutes through Danny Sleath, Guiseley supporters surely thought we would be runners up.
A Jerome Fitzgerald shot that deflected off Cotterill on 119 minutes looked to have the sent the game to a nail biting penalty shootout finish.
But Muller had other ideas.
When the ball was forced in to Ilkeston’s six yard box in the very last minute of extra time, Muller was in the right place at the right time to hit the ball home.
If people in nearby residential areas were asleep, they were awoken by the over the moon travelling Guiseley army who leaped for joy while the management team raced to congratulate the players.
STUNNING SUPPORT
Guiseley were backed by fabulous away support who rallied the team on with loud ‘Guiseley, Guiseley, Guiseley’ chants throughout the match.
They were rewarded with a display full of heart and passion by all the team and management.
It was fantastic to see our fans dash on to the pitch when the final whistle was blown to congratulate the team and staff.
I would like to praise Fitzgerald for giving long time Guiseley supporter James Marshall his cup winner’s medal.
James, surely a future Non League Supporter Hall of Fame member, is known by not just every Guiseley fan, player and staff member but probably away supporters too!
It was great to see Michael Hill leading the team out on to the pitch too. I would like to wish Michael well as he goes through some difficult times.
I travelled to the game with my brother and two fellow supporters, Dennis and George.
Though Dennis successfully made it to the ground in his car, he nearly failed to come home as he was briefly stuck in the Curzon Ashton automatic doors.
The doors just snapped shut on our driver, leaving Dennis shocked for life. Though he was quickly released, I’m not quite sure he’ll be the same coming out of Morrisons again.
Don’t get me started on the narrow turnstiles either...
Kidding aside, the catering team served up some amazing chips before the match.
I was given a team sheet ahead of the game by members of staff as well despite George claiming they don’t give them out to kids.
RAMPANT LIONS 6-0 VICTORS!
Worksop Town felt the full wrath of a re-energised Guiseley outfit as we raced not only to a 4-0 half time advantage but a 6-0 demolition by the final whistle.
What’s scary is had James Walshaw’s delicate chips and pokes found their way in to the net along with a host of other chances we could have had double figures.
It only took two minutes for us to open the scoring as Chris Bolder headed home from an early corner.
We never looked back as Muller notched the first of his brace on 27 minutes and James Walshaw added a third just five minutes later.
When Merris hit home a fabulous individual effort on the stroke of half time the Guiseley faithful were more than grinning.
We even got the comedy effect when James Hanson accidently clocked Steve Kitterick’s sensitive parts with a sliding skid near the technical area.
The boss was left worrying about tackle of a different kind after that collision.
Following the half time break Guiseley did slack off a little and allow their opponents to come at them but it was to no avail as they barely threatened.
Muller tapped a cross home in the 72nd minute to increase the lead before sub Mark Thompson completed the rout in the 87th minute.
It was all good therapy for Dennis’s encounter with the Curzon Ashton automatic doors.
The League Cup win has lifted our spirits and seen the team play with marvellous confidence and zest on Good Friday.
Well done to the players for taking time out after the match to pose for pictures with the League Cup with supporters.
Let’s hope we can continue this form going in to the very important last few games of the season.
Next week I will look ahead to our final two home games as we continue our play-off bid.
That’s all for now folks...
