Hello and welcome to the 34th edition of my weekly blog.
Well hasn’t it been an eventful season? We had a cracking start, couldn’t stop winning home and away, before stuttering during the winter months.
The latter half of the season saw us eventually gain enough points to feature in the play-offs but our promotion dream was halted by Cheshire outfit Nantwich on Tuesday night.
What follows is my choice for favourite game, player and best team performance. I have invited special guest BrotherBrid to give his opinion on the same topics.
ADAMBRID’S FAVOURITE GAME
GUISELEY 1 HEDNESFORD TOWN 2
SATURDAY 28 MARCH 2009
This was an eventful encounter that was a joy to watch as both play-off contenders looked to overtake each other.
The referee’s performance gave it an all round feel as it became almost laughable too!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen two goalkeepers sent off in one match.
Maybe Piotr Skiba did deserve to go but Ratchford’s red, particularly considering his first booking was for having his feet behind the line at a penalty, was bizarre.
The game was a dramatic affair which encapsulated the rough and tumble spirit of playing in the Unibond League.
In some ways the match blew out of all proportions but it was great to watch.
Just when you thought you’d seen it all, there was a fight between two Hednesford supporters straight after the match!
BROTHERBRID’S FAVOURITE GAME
GUISELEY 6 WORKSOP TOWN 0
FRIDAY 10 APRIL 2009
Right from the first whistle Guiseley showed their proud home support what playing good football is all about.
Every time we went forward in the first 45 minutes we looked like we’d score. To be honest, we could well have had double figures by the time the match was over.
We truly decimated Worksop to find ourselves four nil up by half time.
Sure, we slackened a little in the second half and to some extent went back to route one football but still mustered another two goals to send the fans home delighted.
It was particularly pleasing to see five different names on the score sheet. Wasn’t Dave Merris’ goal a cracker too?
To say the match came straight after an exhausting League Cup Final makes the performance and result even more impressive.
ADAMBRID’S FAVOURITE PLAYER
PIOTR SKIBA
I will admit I wasn’t at all keen on our Ossett import after his first few appearances but he soon changed my mind.
At first Skiba was making too many mistakes and letting the side down but his super shot stopping ability soon became clear as the season continued.
The Polish ace kept us in so many games and gained a decent number of clean sheets throughout the season, particularly in the final few matches.
He’s slotted in well and become a familiar face in the Guiseley line up despite having his position threatened by recent addition Aaron Ratchford.
If the number one needs to improve in anything it is his kicking as he sometimes fails to find a Guiseley man and subsequently gives the ball away.
BROTHERBRID’S FAVOURITE PLAYER
DANNY ELLIS
This man always gives 100% whenever he’s in a Guiseley shirt and has had an excellent season.
Ellis is a rock in defence and has become a Guiseley fan favourite due to his gutsy, determined performances which have denied many attackers space to play in.
Much like Skiba, Ellis has kept the side in many games and opposing attackers have found the solid defender a nightmare to play against.
When he has been out injured, the Guiseley defence have looked decidedly different and arguably shaky at times.
One of Steve Kitterick’s first priorities must be to keep his prize asset at Nethermoor for many seasons to come.
He’s also recently shown he has some shooting ability having ventured up front in the latter matches!
ADAMBRID AND BROTHERBRID’S FAVOURITE TEAM PERFORMANCE
GUISELEY 3 -2 ILKESTON TOWN
LEAGUE CUP FINAL
TUESDAY 7 APRIL 2009
This night showcased everything it meant to don the Guiseley shirt: pride, passion, determination and the will to never give up in the face of adversity.
After a tense first half where either side refused to give an inch, the teams were level at one a piece when the final whistle was blown.
Guiseley found themselves sharing the spoils thanks to a Simeon Bambrook stunner.
We had battled hard against a resurgent Ilkeston outfit in a much more open second half to take them in to extra time.
When Ilkeston had the lead going in to the final several minutes of a back and forth epic encounter, Guiseley fans assumed they would be leaving as runners up.
But James Cotterill and ultimately Adam Muller left both side’s supporters gobsmacked as they notched a goal each in the final 120 seconds to give Guiseley the win and trophy.
We’ll never forget the scenes of jubilation that greeted the goal on the bench as Steve Kitterick and his army leaped up and ran to celebrate the goal with the ecstatic players.
You truly could not ask for anymore from Guiseley on this night and despite the victory, you couldn’t help but feel sorry for an understandably gutted Ilkeston side.
That does it for this week’s edition of the weekly blog.
