Adam’s Weekly Blog No. 7
Hello and welcome to the 7th edition of my weekly blog. This week I will talk about my trip to Derbyshire (Read: Sheffield FC) to see Guiseley take on their fellow Yorkshiremen in the dreaded FA Cup replay on Tuesday night.
My Away Day
The Journey There
The trip began when Gary Wild picked me and my brother up in his Guiseley AFC branded minibus near our esteemed Yeadon home. We were almost immediately offered a mini Dime Bar each and quickly settled in amongst the banter. One chap we picked up was blaming his Mrs for his late arrival while later on a nearby police van was the subject of various funny chants. We became embroiled in a £1 betting game where each man picked a score ball from a bag with the correct predictor getting the cash made at the end of the night. Despite several traffic jams, we arrived at the rain soaked Bright Finance Stadium just before kick off.
The Match
At £3 each for my brother and me, you couldn’t complain at the entrance fees though the club had somehow ran out of programmes. But I was startled by the reception I received when I walked past the seated stand. I was greeted with loud shouts of “We all you hate you Leeds scum” by at least half the folk sitting there. Never has my Leeds coat received so much attention! Guiseley’s poor performance in the first half in which we found ourselves 1-0 behind at the break was made even worse by the fact I got drenched all the way through it! My brother didn’t make much to his pie, peas and gravy either! As the second half got underway we were delighted to meet the Guiseley Fan Forum’s very own richard and were greeted with a fleeting appearance from otleybard. Guiseley steadily improved in the second half and grabbed an equaliser through Steve Burton but conceded again to eventually go down and out of the Cup by 2 goals to 1.
The Journey Home
Obviously we were all disappointed with the result but the journey home was nearly as random as the journey there. Two chaps behind us were concerned to find the pub next door were charging £4.50 for a bowl of soup, prompting one to ask whether that was cheaper than the ale. Gary won the sweepstakes with a correct 2-1 pick from the hat and we continued on our journey home in the darkness. Each fan had their own questions and views regarding the match and we discussed these at length before the conversation considered other football related issues. Just before we dropped off several fans on the same street, a young man was seen walking like a soldier prompting chants of “left, right, left, right” inside the minibus. One fan told us we brought the team bad luck as we were dropped off on Kirk Lane to end a good night out apart from the result.
The Thank You
I would like to thank Gary for providing an excellent service which for £7 return was a bargain for just the banter alone!
That concludes this week’s blog. Next week I will talk about good Guiseley players past and present.
