Adam’s Weekly Blog No. 11
This week I am looking ahead to our local derby Challenge Cup clash with Bradford Park Avenue as well as having a nose at how well some non league sides are doing in the FA Cup.
Bring on BPA!
After some dismal results in this season’s FA Trophy and FA Cup, the Challenge Cup gives Guiseley a good chance of adding silverware to their cabinet. Not only that, the 3rd round sees us taking on local rivals in what should be an interesting battle of wits.
We’re flying in the league but BPA are on the edge of the play off places so on paper this will be a tough outing but one Guiseley should be victorious in. We’ve upped our game at home with some good results and hopefully this run will continue with this cup game.
BPA haven’t exactly done brilliant in the cup competitions either this year. They lost out to Blue Square North outfit Droylsden in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup and like Guiseley, exited the Trophy at the first hurdle with defeat to Clitheroe.
Avenue have conceded a fair few goals in some games this season so in my opinion the strikers, be it Brown, Denny, Hanson or Muller, are key to the home side. We must not settle for a one goal lead and look to exploit the defence. We must also look to keep a clean sheet as this has been a recent problem in the league.
For the opposition, Mark Bett will look to get one over on his former club in what could be a feisty match. Fellow striker Rory Paterson has also been among the goals recently so Guiseley must look out for him.
I think we will win this match taking our recent home form in to account but it will be hard.
Double Unibond Success in FA Cup
Anyone heard of Eastwood?
It has disgusted me the lack of attention that has been afforded to our fellow Premier Division side after they reached the second round of this prestigious competition.
After seeing off Wrexham and then Brackley Town in the 1st Round Proper, Eastwood now have the chance to dump unbeaten League Two side Wycombe out of the Cup. It has all the makings of a traditional giant killing.
It’s a home match too, so despite Wycombe’s record, Eastwood have every chance of causing an upset. Ex Guiseley man Simon Sturdy netted against Brackley so he will be looking to pop up again among the goals.
May be if Eastwood get past Wycombe in to the third round they will finally get the attention they deserve.
Curzon Claim Exeter Scalp – could Kidderminster be next?
The Unibond First Division North side have done fantastic having sent Exeter spiralling out of the competition in the first round.
It’s good to see a side in a lower league than ourselves getting great coverage in the media. Their reward is a tricky trip to Blue Square Premier outfit Kidderminster Harriers.
The Harriers saw off Guiseley 2-1 in last season’s FA Trophy but were fortunate to escape with the victory following a 90th minute goal. It was a screamer of a free kick but Guiseley had done well against tough opposition.
Curzon have every chance against Kidderminster and could cause another upset to progress further in the FA Cup. I really hope they go far and reach the third round of the competition.
Next week I will look back at the Marine and Bradford games.
