Wins over Stalybridge Celtic and Wakefield in a hectic week kept the Reserves noses ahead, just, of BPA in the quest for the Lancashire League East Division title.
Avenue have two games in hand over us and if they win them all and we win our three remaining games Avenue would finish ahead of us. We are now looking for Mick Couzens' team to slip up on the run in but knowing Mick he will have every avenue covered!
It has been an exciting season and very competitive with Avenue, Farsley, Wakefield and ourselves in a real good battle.
Our reserve team has had an excellent season and has played some superb football which has been a joy to watch. We have never resorted to putting out virtual teams of first team players - we have got where we are under our own steam - and it shows what a lottery the Lancashire League is beceause it depends on what day of the week you get drawn to play some clubs as to what their strength is. Play them Saturday and you get a reserve team, play them mid-week and with some clubs you get a lot of first team players included and there is nothing in the league rules to stop it so we just get on with it.
After all, if our players are to progress to UniBond first team level as Chris Davey has last Tuesday - a fast and bubbly young side- we triumphed 2-1.
A penalty from Luke Hudson and a strike form James Sylvester sealed the points.
The team was: Steve Thompson; Dan Husband, Tom Higman (Adam Edwards), Carl Palmer, Alun Griffiths; Callum White, Joe Hendrie, Will Hutton, Will Boye (Adam Hill), Luke Hudson, James Sylvester (Liam Robinson). Subs not used: Mark Wilby, Clark Lydon.
For our third game in seven days we trekked to Wakefield on Friday night and with a magnificent display won 2-0.
Our play deserved far more goals but we were happy with the two from Luke Hudson, the second a penalty after Joe Hendrie was fouled.
Luke is real danger up front, never stops running and brave as a lion. But for that six or so games when he had to fill in as a centre-back he would have been romping past the 20 goal mark. Mind you he scored his goal of the season from that position - unfortunately it was in the wrong net! A real stunner in the Wharfedale Cup game at Otley Rovers.
Steve Thompson had to step aside to give Aaron Ratchford, who has been on the bench for the first team for some weeks, a taste of the action.
The only unfortunate thing from the week was a serious injury to Tom Higman in the Stalybridge game and this is expected to keep him out for the rest of the season.
Team at Wakefield: Aaron Ratchford; Callum White, Dan Husbandm, Carl Palmer, Alun Griffiths; Adam Hill, Joe Hendrie (Mark Wilby), Will Hutton (Adam Edwards), Liam Robinson; Luke Hudson, James Sylvester. Subs not used:Clark Lydon, Vince Brockie, Steve Thompson.
