Guiseley Reserves ended their season on a high with a 3-2 win over Ossett Albion watched by Bradford Park Avenue manager Mick Couzens who expects his side to overtake Guiseley when they play their final league match of the season on Tuesday at Ossett Town. (He has already made arrangements for getting the trophy!!)
Guiseley finished their games still on top of the table by one point, if Avenue get a point they would win the title on goal difference and of course if they win they would finish two points ahead of Guiseley.
Nevertheless, whatever the finishing place it has been a vast improvement on last season and the football and spirit has been superb.
I have had a host of complimentary comments about the standard of play and the enjoyment it has brought the ever growing band of spectators.
We went into the last game without goalkeeper Steve Thompson (playing cricket), centre-backs Carl Palmer (on his world travels), Dan Husband and Tom Higman (injured) and our leading scorers Luke Hudson (injured ) and Liam Robinson (working).
This gave Vinnie and Stu a chance to blood some of the U-16s team who have impressed them and they soon got over the disappointment of losing their own cup final on Thursday night as they enjoyed their first taste of open age football.
Clark Lydon took over in goal after warming the bench for a number of weeks in preparation and despite taking some punishment from a physical Albion he came through well.
Henry Myers and fellow newcomer Liam Farrell did well when they came on.
James Sylvester netted two of the Guiseley goals and Will Boye got the other as the side battled hard to come back after twice going behind. Joe Hendrie took over the captain's armband and gave his usual fully committed display to keep his side going forward.
We welcomed a contingent of Alun Griffiths' family, up from Wales to watch him, and the crowd also boasted Leeds United starlet Aidan White who paid his two quid on the gate like the rest to watch brother Callum!
We are grateful to all the support we have had for the Reserves over the season with plenty of support from the families of the lads playing and it is much appreciated.
Saturday's team was: Clark Lydon; Callum White, Sam Jacomb, Joe Hendrie, Alun Griffiths; Adam Hill (Henry Myers), Will Hutton, Mark Wilby (Liam Farrell), Will Boye; Adam Edwards, James Sylvester. Subs not used: Sam Robinson, Stu Gray, Vince Brockie.
With nine of Saturday's squad 19 and under and Higman, Hudson, Husband, Hendrie, Griffiths and Robinson all 21 or under there is a great future for this squad.
Let's not forget the old guy in goal! Thommo has done a great job for us with his experience, which has been invaluable with such a young team in front of him.
Big plus for the season - getting Chris Davey into the first team squad after a number of seasons of excellent work with the Ressies.
Thanks to all the lads for providing us all with such excellent football and thanks most of all to Vinnie and Stu for providing us with a squad capable of playing to such high levels. They have really set the standard now and Vinnie is promising the lads an even tougher pre-season next time around!!
Thanks to Kate for dealing with all the injuries, thanks to our gateman, Brian Myers; to Dave Robinson for helping out making drinks when I have been busy elsewhere; and to everyone who has helped in any way. It is much appreciated.
Let's all go and enjoy the presentation night at the Royal Armouries - a fitting venue for our warriors!
