The Reserves played their last friendly at Relay Recruitment on Sunday morning and won 3-2. It was a very good pitch and the opposition, despite being a Sunday side, were a very good side and gave us a real challenge.
Apparently Vinnie selected them because they gave his Sunday side - Beech (no mugs themselves) a real hammering last season and played good football.
It was nice to catch up with Ammers (Amjad Iqbal) at the game, we had a chat about when he was a Guiseley Reserve team player under the management of Brett Ferriday.
The opposition included a player just released by a pro club and it was obvious they were going to give us a good game. We went a goal down early doors due to some indecisive defending. A swerving shot from Luke Hudson was pushed away for a corner and then the lively Hudson was just wide with both a header and then a shot.
A Dan Berry header was taken by the 'keeper while at the other end Ben Higginson showed his worth with a good save. Guiseley were then awarded a penalty for a foul on Paul Wills and up stepped Hudson to ram the ball home for the equaliser.
In the second-half Guiseley took the lead from the full of running Liam Robinson - a rare header from the goal machine.
Guiseley made a number of substitutions in the second-half but by and large it did not disrupt their flow. Higginson made another excellent save and then Higman tried his luck from 40 yards but it went just wide.
Adam Edwards pulled the ball back for Hudson but his shot was saved and then Edwards again set up Hudson but he shot wide.
Late in the game Relay levelled at 2-2 but the battling Guiseley boys were not done and substitute Graham Shaw edged them ahead again to finish 3-2 winners.
Guiseley: Ben Higginson; Sam Jacomb (Jamie Cairns), Tom Higman, Calum Strodder, Danny Todd; Adam Hill (Adam Edwards), Sam Robinson, Danny Berry (Mark Wilby), Liam Robinson (Chris McCarthy); Paul Willis (Graham Shaw), Luke Hudson.
Dan Husband was on holiday and missed the game and Will Boye was working at the Test match (short shift on Sunday Will!) Will Hutton is still in America on holiday, Lee Williamson was injured but still got up to attend a Sunday morning game as a spectator, which shows the committment of these boys!
We had our usual support from parents and grandparents, much appreciated as ever, and it was an enjoyable game.
Roll on Saturday and the first league game at Ossett Town, a club now run at first team level by the ex-Guiseley reserves assistant Paul Lines and former Bradford PA reserve team boss Mick Cousins. That's a 2pm kick-off at Ossett Town.
