Guiseley Reserves opened their Lancashire League season with a 5-3 win at Ossett Town on Saturday - a game which exposed some defensive frailties in a side which showed late changes with the addition of players involved with the first team squad in pre-season in Chris Davey, James Nestor, Luck Malcher and Calum White.
The Reserves were struggling defensively with Dan Husband still on holiday, Tom Higman unavailable, Sam Jacomb out due to illness and Dan Berry having broken his arm in training last Tuesday night.
There was a superb penalty save from our new 'keeper Ben Higginson in a game in which Calum Strodder had a bit of a nightmare conceding two penalties.
Guiseley took the lead through Adam Hill in the 21st minute but Ossett levelled just before the break.
In the second-half Luke Malcher put Guiseley ahead at 2-1 (53 mins) and then Liam Robinson extended the lead (67 mins).
Ossett pulled a goal back in the 68th minute making it 3-2.
Substitute Adam Edwards restored the two goal cushion when James Nestor's effort from close range hit the post and came out to the prowling Edwards, who hammered it into the goal.
Chris Davey got his name on the scoresheet in the 80th minute taking Guiseley to 5-2 but then Ossett netted again in the 83rd minute to make the final score 5-3.
Not a performance to be proud of but three points nevetheless.
Guiseley: Ben Higginson; Callum White, Calum Strodder, Luke Hudson (capt), Danny Todd; Adam Hill (Adam Edwards), Sam Robinson, Chris Davey, Liam Robinson; Luke Maclher, James Nestor. Subs Jamie Cairns, Will Boye, Mark Wilby, Lee Williamson.
It is always a difficult time early doors for the Reserve team as the first team are still sorting their squad out and players are sent to the Reserves for game time. It is usually the end of September before the Reserve squad settles down.
Credit to players like Luke Hudson who had to step back into a central defensive role on Saturday when we all know he would much prefer to have played as a striker.
The Reserves have had a big squad in training and pre-season games too and a lot of lads were left kicking their heels on Saturday but hang in there and things sort themselves out in a few weeks.
The Reserves are looking forward to their first home game of the season on Saturday when we entertain Harrogate Railway (3pm) hope to see lots of supporters there.
