Marine Sack O Donnell 07/04/2008
UniBond Premier League Marine have announced the axing of striker Karl O Donnell following his sending off during the heavy home defeat against promotion chasers Gateshead on Saturday. O Donnell was sent off for violent conduct after injuring a Gateshead player in an off the ball incident in the 76th minute just after Marine had pulled a goal back. O Donnell had only been on the pitch as substitute for six minutes before the lunge and it was his first appearance since going awol almost two weeks ago.
Marine Chairman Paul Leary said, “This has been an extremely disappointing end to what was supposed to have been a season that promised so much. Our league form has suffered heavily from our very poor disciplinary record with the consequential suspensions and the incident on Saturday was the final straw. Alvin has told O Donnell that he will not play again for Marine and his registration as a Marine player will not be renewed at the end of the season. With 11 red cards this season it is likely that Alvin and I will have to face an FA hearing. It is obvious the existing disciplinary policy has not worked and this will be changed for next season. As a Club we cannot tolerate what has happened this season and the example on Saturday left us with no choice but to take this action.”
Marine Manager Alvin McDonald said, “I have always been proud of the teams that I have managed and the manner in which they have played. I have won leagues and at the same time received fair play awards but the number of sending offs this season is not acceptable to me as Manager nor to my Chairman. The incident on Saturday left me with no alternative but to end Karl s short career at Marine.”
