With Harrogate Town Reserves winning 3-0 at Wakefield Reserves on Friday night and thus displacing us and returning to the top of the Lancashire League - it was important that we got maximum points. And so it turned out as we ran out comfortable winners 4-0 at Pontefract Collieries Reserves who had last week drawn with Farsley Celtic Reserves and previously beaten Bradford (Park Avenue) Reserves 3-1.
With Danny Todd, Callum White, Liam Robinson, Will Hutton, Clark Lydon gk, Lee Williamson and Mark Wilby all missing, it gave me the chance to give the 16 year olds a chance to play - they didn't let me down as the whole team gave a very accomplished display.
The conditions were horrible on a very cold day and a match played on a bobbly surface that was frozen bone hard in patches.
Calum Strodder had his header cleared off the line before Adam Edwards opened the scoring following good work by Paul Wills. A looping cross by Duncan Beckwith was misjudged by the Ponty goalkeeper to make the half-time score 2-0 to Guiseley.
16 year old Sam Robinson turned, chipped the ball over the defender and scored with a shot from just inside the penalty area to make it 3-0. Graham Shaw came on as a sub to complete the scoring with a well taken goal. We also had two disalowed goals.
The whole team played well, showed good team spirit and tried to pass the ball but put their foot in when they needed to.
GUISELEY RES: Alex Woodcock gk, Duncan Beckwith, Will Boye, Jamie Cairns, Calum Strodder, Sam Whittaker, Sam Robinson, Chris Davey, Adam Edwards, Paul Wills. Subs: Chris McCarthy (for Adam Edwards), Alex Rowe gk (not used), Josh Ripley (for Paul Wills), Graham Shaw (for Sam Robinson)
Thanks to Rachel O'Conner for picking up and taking home some players to Headingley and to Kate O'Conner for being the physio - ask what happened to Kate when during the match I asked to call her mum to get the half-time score of the Guiseley v Tamworth - we all knew the game had been cancelled......!!!
Some sad news - I LOST MY FONE AT THEIR GROUND - going to Vodafone tomorrow morning to buy a new one..... In the meantime you can e-mail me at mick.couzens2008@yahoo.co.uk
The next Reserve match is a top of the table clash on Wednesday February 3 away at second placed Harrogate Town Reserves. This is followed by a home game next Saturday at home ko 3pm against Farsley Celtic Reserves
