It’s great to be back writing my blog for the Guiseley fans.
This week I’m going to talk about the FA Trophy and a key midfield man.
RUNNING RAMPANT IN THE FA TROPHY
We’re doing fantastic in the FA Trophy this season having defeated Chorley, knocked out the holders Barrow and seen off Stalybridge Celtic to reach the last 16. We have a good chance of beating Eastbourne but this will be a tough game with the long 580 mile round trip down south. We have improved since last season when we only reached the First Round Proper of the tournament. We have been promoted since then, have a much stronger side and so have made progress in this competition. We beat Barrow on their own patch with just nine men and could easily have won more comfortably than the 3-2 score line suggested. Against Stalybridge we were forced to adjust our style and come from a goal behind against an aggressive outfit. The Manchester based team seemed to have come for a draw as they put ten men behind the ball and were just playing hit and hope football. This wasn’t attractive to watch but the game was exciting because there was lots of end to end, free flowing football. It was a shock when Stalybridge took the lead because it was mostly Guiseley dominating the play before that point. The defence weren’t ready for what was going to hit them with a free kick curling in to the opposite side of the box to where they were based. We were having chances after the Stalybridge goal till the end of the game with the equaliser coming just before half time in the form of a penalty following a foul on Joe O’Neill. He was clean through and only had the goal in front of him when the Stalybridge captain took him down and received a straight red card. To be fair to the lad he was one of a few clean Stalybridge players and the penalty resulted in a James Walshaw equaliser. Guiseley bombarded the Stalybridge goal and thought the second had come when Walshaw scored but it was given offside by the linesman. Guiseley still dominated and the second came when Liam Needham scored with a brilliant header to take the Lions through to the last 16. At the end of the game there was violence between a Stalybridge player and Walshaw after the game as the player pushed Walshaw to the ground and should have received a straight red.
A KEY MIDFIELD MAN
Warren Peyton has got to be one of Steve Kittrick’s best summer signings. He is consistent, solid and can control anything that comes his way. He has changed the midfield from last season when it seemed nonexistent sometimes. His passing is accurate and he supports his fellow team mates. He may not have had the best of games on Saturday but throughout the season so far he has been a brilliant player.
With the big game against Boston coming up tomorrow I will assess our other title chasers and promotion contenders next week.
