Hello and welcome to the latest edition of my weekly blog.
This week I want to talk about the crazy prices in the transfer window and the record day in the Premiership.
Andy Carroll has netted eleven times this season for Newcastle but he is only young and still not proven at this level yet he fetched a £35 million price tag.
Fernando Torres hasn’t been on form until very recently yet he cost Chelsea a staggering £50 million.
A record breaking £225 million was splashed out during the first month of 2011. More would have been added to that huge figure if Harry Redknapp’s last ditch bid for Charlie Adam had been accepted.
I think football has turned in to a crazy business when it comes to transfers in the Premier League.
But even though the January transfer window is often not as interesting as the summer race, this year’s deadline was enthralling and exciting. The very fact the big money transfers were going through was what made it fascinating.
I stayed glued to Sky Sports News to witness the excitement and build-up. I was, however, gutted to see Leeds United making no permanent signings on the final day.
But following last weekend’s goal fest it seems clubs do not need to splash the cash in order to win. Everton came from behind to beat Blackpool 5-3 while Newcastle came from 4-0 down to draw with Arsenal without their top goal scorer.
However, Arsenal’s lack of ability to hold a significant lead at the weekend shows that a team who added nobody to their squad maybe should have. They could argue the referee made a few big mistakes but this doesn’t change the fact they were 4-0 up at one point.
That’s all for this week folks.
Next week I will have a look at how our old rivals are doing in the glue league.
