GUISELEY AFCs Reserve team has suffered badly with a lack of games due to the atrocious weather this winter and the first team’s successful runs in various cup competitiions.
This has meant countless Reserve team games having to be postponed and on Saturday we had to hire out a ground at Esholt Sports Club to get our Lancashire League first round cup tie against Eccleshill United played.
This game followed hot on the heels of a disappointing 1-0 reverse at Farsley on Thursday night.
Guiseley had the majority of play against Farsley and had a stunning Liam Robinson goal wiped out - not the first time Guiseley’s pace has not been matched by a linesman!
Disaster struck in the 65th minute when a rash challenge by Josh Arnold saw him get a second yellow and a subsequent red card leaving the side with ten men.
Salt was rubbed into the wound when from the free-kick former Guiseley Reserves centre-back Calum Strodder netted the winning goal.
Two new young players were introduced to the squad with Cameron Lynn and Shaquille Clarke-Adams showing some blistering pace to go with that of skipper Liam
Robinson.
The Guiseley midfield demonstrated some powder puff shooting failing to get enough power in their shots from good positions.
The side moved on eager to make ammends in the League Cup tie and so they did although at times they did over elaborate and squander chances.
Jamie Cairns was again a driving force at the back winning the aerial battle and constantly encouraging the team with excellent support from the ever-improving Danny Berry as the team roared to a 5-1 win.
Harrison McPhee was given his full debut at right-back and made a good impression whilst Tas Liolios was solid at left-back and continually tried to set Liam Robinson free and get in good crosses.
Sam Whittaker and Grant Roberts worked hard in
central midfield with Adam Edwards and the irrepressible Robinson constantly having the beating of the Eccleshill defence.
Will Knight and Will Boye provided a big presence up front before making way in the later stages for Shaquille
Clarke-Adams and Cameron Lynn to again show their devastating pace and both picked up a goal.
Robinson opened the scoring from the penalty spot with an assured strike and then - a rarity for him - scored with a header. Will Knight bagged the other goal.
Wakefield visit Nethermoor on Saturday, March 19th with a 3pm kick-off. They will also provide the opposition in the next round of the League Cup away at their College Road ground.
The squad for the 5-1 win over Eccleshill United was: Ed Hall; Harrison McPhee, Danny Berry, Jamie Cairns, Tas Liolios; Adam Edwards (Shaquille Clarke-Adams), Grant Roberts (Chris McCarthy), Sam Whittaker, Liam Robinson; Will Knight, (Cameron Lynn). Sub not used: Matt Bilney
