Hello and welcome to the 10th anniversary edition of my 2011 weekly blog.
This week I’m looking at our recent bad run of form.
After our defeat to Luton in the FA Trophy, a game we could easily have won, we have dipped dramatically in form.
Losses to both Vauxhall and Telford in four days meant we had more league defeats at home in the space of a week than we had done all season.
Vauxhall were a quick and pacey side that were very good at counter attacking and taking their chances but we were unlucky after hitting the post and crossbar three times. We had a lot of chances to win the game but just couldn’t get the ball in the net.
Against Telford more opportunities were wasted and a poor refereeing performance also slammed Guiseley to a 3-0 defeat. But in my opinion Telford were the best side seen at Nethermoor so far this season with their great performance that sent their fans home delighted.
Then we bounced back against FC Halifax with a fair performance arguably helped more by diabolical refereeing decisions. The victory saw us secure a West Riding County Cup Final at Valley Parade and it seemed like our confidence was back. Kittrick was clearly taking this competition very seriously unlike the opposition whose manager didn’t even turn up.
But the following game against Worcester could have been a goal fest for Guiseley but instead it once again showed the opposition were better at taking their chances. A solitary Danny Glover goal that was well taken saw the visitors triumph.
We could only manage a draw against a well organised Workington side who we led twice. We should have sealed three points but yet again we couldn’t take our chances.
In a game nearly as drab as the Harrogate away tie we got a point at Stalybridge but could have easily have left Manchester with both zero points and a Steven Drench suspension as he narrowly avoided a sending off for a penalty box tackle. Stalybridge weren’t a dirty outfit and were totally different from the team that lined up at Nethermoor twice earlier this season.
We showed enough steel in our next game to defeat the runaway Alfreton as we made them look very ordinary and in the end they were fortunate to escape with all three points. But their killer instinct was the difference in this one. The game was spoiled by the ref who couldn’t help but blow his whistle every five seconds and we took the Derbyshire side to the limit.
In a match where the referee cheated us again with a disallowed goal we were still victorious over Nuneaton. We put in a great performance along with a clean sheet as we seemed to have bounced back once again.
But a disappointing 1-1 draw with second from bottom Stafford Rangers has slowed us down once again. We were very unlucky not to come away with a win here. I hope Stafford stay up what with all the commitment and desire shown here. They celebrated their equaliser like they’d won a trophy as all outfield players greeted the goal scorer in the far corner. It showed just how much a point meant to them.
There’s a massive game coming up tomorrow against fellow play-off contenders Solihull. The game could go a long way to deciding which team will complete the round robin entrants.
That’s it for this week folks.
Next week I will look at the games coming up for all the play-off contenders.
