Hello and welcome to the latest edition of my weekly blog.
In a change to the advertised format I am going to look at the past two games against Solihull and Alfreton.
After a 1-0 win over Solihull on Saturday we went to Alfreton full of confidence looking to take the game to the runaway Derbyshire outfit.
But we got battered in a 6-0 thrashing and were thoroughly outplayed and embarrassed by our opponents.
The players looked tired against Alfreton and our thin squad size showed in this game. Danny Forrest returning to Barrow has compounded these worries following Liam Needham’s injury.
Liam’s absence has badly affected the side as a whole. We lost him in the middle of our run of home games whilst our season was at its busiest.
The Alfreton game did not get off to a good start after a defensive mix-up saw us concede in the first minute. But then the game seemed to have brightened up for Guiseley following an Alfreton sending off for a horror tackle.
However Alfreton were in total control and a three minute cumulative hat trick from Hearn saw the game effectively over by just the 47th minute.
A sixth goal just increased the rugby score and was the final nail in the coffin of a dreadful and tired Guiseley performance.
Considering this was Alfreton’s sixth game in 15 days the match showed just how much bigger their squad is and illustrates how well they were able to cope this far in to the season.
We weren’t the only side to go down 6-0 at Alfreton. They simply completed their hat trick of 6-0 kickings on Tuesday night after dishing out beatings earlier in the season to Corby Town and our local rivals Harrogate Town.
Ironically our biggest win of the season was against Corby Town who we beat 4-0 at Nethermoor in a game that also saw a Darryn Stamp hat trick.
The performance against Solihull couldn’t have been more different than that delivered against Alfreton. Solihull were average but we thought hard and a sublime Danny Forrest goal propelled us to all three points.
But the injury to Steve Drench here was a big factor in the loss at Alfreton. Although the shots against him were blistering, James Coates lacked the big match experience having hardly featured this season. Had Drench been in goal in could have been a different story but we will never know.
That’s it for this week folks.
Next week I will review the West Riding County Cup Final.
