Hello and welcome to the latest edition of my weekly blog.
This week I’m reviewing our successful trip to Valley Parade in the West Riding County Cup final.
After a very funny trip to Bradford on the supporters’ bus we arrived outside Valley Parade and were greeted by none other than ex-Coventry and Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd.
The Baildon born pundit didn’t speak to our crew personally but he apologised for walking straight in to me.
Inside we spotted the lack of organisation when we discovered the refreshments kiosk were all out of change and couldn’t get me, Brotherbrid and Scouserbrid any pop and cordial. Their definition of a ‘tray’ of chips also leaves a lot to be desired.
Scouserbrid did however put aside the cobwebs in his wallet to buy us a programme that turned out to be a two minute read.
The ground which could soon be vacant was very nice and comfortable. There were great views from most seats and although both Guiseley and Thackley fans sat in the same stand it seemed as if you could sit anywhere in the bottom tiers.
The players looked to have enjoyed playing in a big stadium and on a sizeable pitch which could be a first for some of our squad.
Luke Sharry, Simon Ainge, Danny Ellis and Ryan Toulson would have liked to have scored on their former stomping ground but all played well.
The Thackley players were aggressive and dirty in patches, especially the lads who picked a fight with Wally late on in extra time. One even had his hands round the Guiseley striker’s throat.
The opposition took the lead twice in normal time but we recovered both times to and eventually won 4-2 after extra time with ten men after Joe O’Neill went off injured.
Thackley got right out of the blocks and took a deserving lead following a silly defensive mistake but we roared back and showed just why we are so high in the non-league pyramid.
O’Neill’s good finish saw us equalise for the first time while Stamp fired in a header to take us to the extra thirty minutes.
O’Neill added to his tally with another strike before Walshaw sealed it with a trademark penalty.
It was a bit disappointing that a select group of Thackley fans saw fit to boo us as we collected the trophy and winning medals for the eighth time, especially after we clapped them.
Next week I will look at our next three opponents as the league run in reaches its climax.
