Hello and welcome to the latest edition of my weekly blog.
With the play offs looming and the regular season over following Saturday’s draw with Eastwood, I am looking back at some of the best and worst games of this campaign.
In my opinion the best games of the season came against Hinckley United, Gainsborough Trinity, Redditch and Barrow.
There can only be one contender for worst game of the season, a mauling at Alfreton Town.
The Hinckley match was pure entertainment. We scored three times and all three goals were net rippers. Gavin Rothery found the net twice while Warren Peyton struck the other.
This was a great team performance in a very close game. It was our first home game for 24 days in the league after many away trips in a cold and clustered winter period when I donned my 50 layers including a Guiseley shirt.
Gainsborough was the venue for an amazing early season clash that saw sleek passing moves earn us three valuable points.
This was another excellent team performance which saw a brace from Warren Peyton and a Liam Needham cracker.
At an old fashioned, traditional ground with great home support we turned our play up a notch to outclass Brian Little’s Lincolnshire outfit.
Alfreton away. Enough said. The fact they were down to ten men after just ten minutes following a horror tackle on Darryn Stamp made this 6-0 beating even harder to swallow.
We conceded in the first minute and it all went downhill from there. We were 4-0 down by half down and those of us that made the journey to Derbyshire were left wondering just what had happened.
They seem to like beating Yorkshire sides 6-0 after they thumped Harrogate by the same score line earlier in the season.
We did however take positives from this game as it gave us the real kick up Otleybard’s sun hat that we needed.
One of the games that showcased this new found belief in ourselves was a well fought victory over basement club Redditch in a game that saw us losing 2-1 until the 89th minute.
A Wally penalty and a Simon Baldry winner saw us despatch already relegated Redditch in the dying moments of the game.
We knocked out FA Trophy holders Barrow despite having just nine men at the game’s conclusion following the dismissals of Danny Boshell and Ryan Toulson.
We went 3-0 up in the first 20 minutes and though we missed a penalty in the second half and Barrow fought back we held on to reach the quarter finals of the competition.
We were unlucky to lose to a plucky Luton Town side in that round. The London outfit scored just the one goal and capitalised on just the one defensive mistake we made all game to nick it.
What was your favourite game of the season?
That’s it for this week folks.
Next week I will review and preview the play-off semi-finals.
Good luck to the lads this coming week and thank you to all for what has been a great season at Nethermoor.
