Hello and welcome to the latest edition of my weekly blog.
I was going to look at the Premier League relegation battle this week but following the fantastic events at Boston and the upcoming final at AFC Telford I am changing that focus.
I had concluded years ago that non-league football was far more exciting than the action in the “big leagues” and this past weekend confirmed that.
The semi-final was one of the best football games I’ve ever seen. It was an end to end, exciting game played in front of two sets of frenetic and frantic supporters determined to cheer their team to victory.
The game looked to have started badly after Boston scored with just ten minutes on the clock but we battled to equalise and got the leveller in the second half with a Gavin Rothery goal that sent the Guiseley fans in to raptures.
As Graham argued with the Boston United kids they took the lead once more to send the game and the breathless Guiseley fans in to extra time with the game 2-2 on aggregate.
But the lads kept on battling and Darryn Stamp’s thunderbolt looked like a fitting winner but Boston found the net once more to take it to penalties.
Steve Drench, who had played great all game, saved three Boston spot kicks as Stamp, Walshaw and Peyton scored to send the Guiseley fans home delighted.
As Graham consumed more than several BrotherBridbought Jaffa Cakes on the coach home we chanted “Same old Graham, always eating!” before “Guiseley, Guiseley, Guiseley!”
But to be fair to the man he did offer Dime bars and other consumables to the Guiseley nation on the way to the Jakemans Stadium.
We enjoyed a drink in a small pub where Harry found himself pulling pints behind the bar after proclaiming his public house experience due to the staff shortages.
The lads were extraordinary and if we carry the same confidence and belief in to Sunday we have all the tools to beat Telford.
It’s fantastic we are taking three coaches there; it just shows the strength of the Guiseley support and the team have the town behind them.
Even if we lose on Sunday I would have been happy with just a play-off place. I am proud of the players and the management team and I want to congratulate Kitty and the lads on a phenomenal season with such a small squad.
We’ve proved a lot of people wrong as we were favourites to be relegated. We’ve played an astonishing 56 games, won the
West Riding County Cup, reached the FA Cup First Round Proper and an FA Trophy Quarter Final.
That’s it for this week folks.
Next time I will look at the highs and lows of the season.
Good luck to the lads on Sunday.
