Hello and welcome to the latest edition of my weekly blog.
This week I’m looking at Guiseley’s New Year’s resolutions.
In 2012 we must do the following:
• Keep winning
We have to keep up the pressure on Hyde and Stalybridge and the only way to do that is to keep winning. In recent weeks we have closed the gap on second placed Celtic who are also a consistent outfit. Every time we get closer to them we get closer to first placed Hyde who have proven to be nearly unstoppable this season. We must also preserve our position in the play offs whilst trying to progress.
• Keep the squad together
At non-league level it’s very difficult to keep the same squad season to season. But one of the key reasons Guiseley are as high as they are is the loyalty of a number of players such as Danny Ellis, Dave Merris and Simon Ainge. Players like these form the solid core of a squad we must keep together to achieve success. We must also hold on to goal scorers like Gavin Rothery and try sign Chris Senior who is currently on loan and plays what could be his last game on Sunday. I hear Thierry Henry is available?!
• Perform better away from home
If these resolutions were for 2011, the opposite of the above would be true. However this time round we seem to perform better at Nethermoor and have truly made it our fortress. On occasion our away performances have lacked ambition and we look a different team away from home. Both points and results decide this tough league; performing away from home could be the difference between a great season and a poor campaign.
• Progress in the cups
We have a cracking chance to progress in the FA Trophy with a home match against Stalybridge on the horizon. We are also still on track in the West Riding County Cup with a tie against local rivals FC Halifax coming up. Both cups carry great cash rewards should we do well and must be a top priority this season. I’ve been to a few finals involving Guiseley and it’s been an awesome feeling when we’ve won. I’d love that feeling to return this season.
That’s it for this week folks. I want to take this opportunity to wish everybody a Happy New Year.
Next week I will look at some of the longest journeys in football.
