Hello and welcome to the latest edition of my weekly blog.
With our West Riding County Cup final appearance coming up next month, this week I’m looking back at past Guiseley cup finals.
Perhaps the greatest of all Lions cup final games was a 4-4 draw with Gresley Rovers in the 1991 FA Vase Final.
Fatherbrid who attended the game says it was a memorable occasion. He travelled to the match on one of the supporters’ coaches as plenty attended the Wembley encounter.
Guiseley had the fans in raptures with a 3-0 lead but Gresley showed great resilience to take us in to extra time before both teams scored again to force a replay.
We triumphed 3-1 in the game at Sheffield United’s Brammall Lane to bring the trophy home.
The following season we took on Winborne Town in the final but were on the wrong end of a 5-3 loss as the Dorset outfit turned in a solid performance.
Fatherbrid who also attended this enjoyable battle concedes that Winborne played well against a Guiseley side tipped by many to lift the trophy for the second successive season.
Fast forwarding to more modern times and Guiseley have made their presence known in several more cup competitions.
We defeated Ilkeston 3-2 after extra time at Curzon Ashton to lift the Chairman’s Cup in 2009. It was 0-0 after 90 minutes as well!
After taking abuse from the Ilkeston faithful all game we battled to overcome a 2-1 deficit with just minutes to spare.
I remember shaking hands with the players as they walked right by us to lift the cup. I hear the road nearby was renamed Lord Kittrick Way afterwards!
It also marks the only time I’ve seen Dennis get stuck in an automatic door.
Last year’s West Riding County Cup Final against Thackley at Valley Parade was also a cracker.
You know the night can only be good when you step off the coach and Aidy Boothroyd is standing close.
We came from behind twice to take the game to extra time against a lively Thackley outfit.
It was during those 30 minutes where we shone some more and eventually triumphed 4-2.
Here’s hoping we can retain the trophy against local rivals Bradford Park Avenue at Valley Parade on April 11.
That’s it for this week folks.
Next time I will look at our run in as we move towards the season’s conclusion.
