Hello and welcome to the latest edition of my weekly blog.
This week I’m looking at the play-offs so far.
Matty Wilson’s stoppage time equaliser on Wednesday night may
well have turned the tide of Sunday’s semi-final second leg.
With Nuneaton ahead after just two minutes Guiseley heads went down but the players never gave up and scrambled home a vital goal in the dying embers.
We stuttered for the vast majority of the encounter, offering little killer instinct up front and sometimes gifting the home side chances.
But the lads never stopped fighting and sparked a fan frenzy when Wilson poked home in front of the away support.
Matty was chased by many elated Lions followers as he celebrated the strike and the mood changed in an instant ahead of Sunday.
“Stevie Kittrick’s Barmy Army” were met with vociferous chants of “Guiseley, Guiseley, Guiseley” as the team clapped the supporters.
We should be in a confident mood ahead of the second leg having proved once again that we never stop till the final whistle is blown.
But Nuneaton should not be taken lightly; despite our improved second half display they created more opportunities and took the game to us.
They may also be confident in knowing that they led for all but four minutes of the midweek match.
It was another tight battle with the team we have now drawn three of five games over the past two seasons.
Ironically we always seem to share a 1-1 result.
Should we make it to the final it’s also difficult to guess our opponents as Gainsborough and Halifax drew 2-2 despite Trinity taking an initial 2-0 lead.
Updates from The Northolme spurred the tentative support on but Halifax fought back to create another unpredictable tie.
With plenty sure to follow the Lions on Sunday we have every chance of making the final for the second successive season.
But we must assert ourselves from the get go; Nuneaton showcased their creative talents on Wednesday night and could do the same on Sunday.
We’ve been brilliant this season and here’s hoping we can continue on our path to ending the season on an amazing high.
That’s it for this week folks.
Next week I will review the play-off semi-final.
