Hello and welcome to the latest edition of my weekly blog.
This week I’m looking back at the first half of the season just gone.
We had a cracking start with just the one loss at Droyslden in August. Thumping 3-0 and 5-0 home victories over Hinckley United and Blyth Spartans respectively helped us to third in the league by month’s end.
Even Blyth’s manager admitted we outclassed his side on that night.
Goals came from all over the park as the likes of Danny Forrest, Danny Boshell and Lee Ellington were among those to net.
We maintained our third place through the majority of September as we saw off Vauxhall Motors and Worcester City 4-1.
But the month also saw us concede a 3-1 lead to local rivals FC Halifax on a cold Tuesday night at Nethermoor as our opponents ran out 4-3 winners.
Despite a hard fought battle a 1-0 loss at Gainsborough Trinity followed as we dropped to fourth in the league.
It seemed there was a distinct difference emerging in our home and away form with positive results contrasting to poor ones away from Nethermoor.
But this turned round a little in October as we knocked
Stalybridge out of the FA Cup and beat Workington 3-1 in the league the following week.
However, a shocking 1-0 loss at Ashington saw us dumped out of the FA Cup. The game was poor and the team just didn’t seem to click.
But we showcased brilliant bounce-back-ability without Iain Dowie through a 2-0 home win over eventual league winners Hyde.
A jam packed November opened with a comfortable 2-0 West Riding County Cup First Round win over Tadcaster Albion.
It was a trophy we’d go on to retain just before the season’s conclusion.
Draws with four teams followed but results against the likes of Worcester, Eastwood, Stalybridge and Nuneaton were credible and we moved up to third.
Eastwood were relegated before the season finale but could easily have beaten us as we played most of that game with ten men.
Revenge against the Badgers followed just a week later though as we thumped the North Midlands outfit 7-0 to make further progress in the FA Trophy.
It was 5-0 at half time!
The month was capped off in stunning style as we saw off Harrogate Railway 4-3 at the last gasp to continue our County Cup run.
Danny Forrest’s unbelievable match winning stoppage time strike from the half-way line made him an overnight YouTube sensation.
The awesome Cup results led us in to a fabulous December when we won every game!
2-1 league victories over both Workington and Blyth saw us maintain third place in the league and a sweet FA Trophy win over FC United of Manchester followed.
Andy Holdsworth’s two goals helped us to a 2-1 win over Boston before we showed no signs of a Christmas hangover with a 4-0 Boxing Day thumping at Harrogate Town.
That’s it for this week folks.
Next time I will continue with the season review.
