Hello and welcome to the latest edition of my weekly blog.
This week I’m handing out my end of season awards.
Up first is the gong for Player of the Season. This accolade goes to Steven Drench.
He’s made some vital saves including a stunning last minute penalty stop in the last minute at Blyth Spartans.
He’s a consistent performer whose saves often both change games and keep us in them.
This is a tough award to give out with so many players performing to such a high standard this season. The back four in particular have been sensational.
Match of the season has to be our 4-3 home victory over Droylsden on January 21.
Finding ourselves 3-0 down till the 76th minute we thought a point let alone a win was beyond even the team who have showcased arguably the greatest fighting resolve this campaign.
Danny Forrest and James Walshaw’s arrivals on the pitch just before the last 20 minutes began changed the game.
Little did we know the aforementioned striker would go on to bag a hat trick inside seven minutes.
Chris Senior netted what many believed was a consolation before Walshaw hit his first of three just two minutes later.
At 3-2 supporters were hopeful we could bag a point while
Walshaw’s second three minutes later made this a possible reality.
Wally completed his hat trick in the 87th minute to send the home fans loopy. We held on to secure a fantastic victory.
My award for Goal of the Season has to go to Danny Forrest’s half way line strike in the dying embers of the Harrogate Railway West Riding County Cup tie.
The goal not only took us through to the next round but made the midfielder an internet sensation as thousands more than the 82 there on the night witnessed his match winning strike.
I’ll always remember Paul Mcgreavy’s quote as we left the ground : “It was like Lee Westwood” before giving us an impression of the star golfer.
After finding out we were 1-0 down just after I’d sampled some Harrogate chips I daren’t have even dreamt of such an amazing ending to the game.
We went to win the Cup with a last gasp victory over Bradford Park Avenue at Valley Parade.
My Away Trip of the Season was to Cambridge for our FA Trophy match-up.
The game was cancelled three times before finally getting the go-ahead on a cold February night.
I’m not used to such long distance travelling on a Tuesday evening and I was knackered for school the next morning but it was well worth it.
We only just made kick-off due to traffic but there was lots of banter on the way there. Although we lost 1-0 we did ourselves proud and no-one went back to Yorkshire disappointed.
Other favourite away days include the journeys to Hyde for our famous victory, Harrogate for a Boxing Day Guiseley goal-fest and Halifax for an awesome win.
My favourite Home Match of the Season was our 7-0 thumping of Eastwood Town in the FA Trophy.
I’ve never seen a 5-0 Guiseley lead at half time before and wasn’t expecting such a landslide after a 2-2 draw against the same team just two weeks earlier.
Gavin Rothery bagged a hat trick, Danny Forrest scored two while Ciaran Toner and Simon Baldry completed the rout.
Rothery’s third was particularly special; his scorching volley sent the Guiseley crowd in to raptures.
My award for Favourite Away Ground is Northolme, home to Gainsborough Trinity.
There’s something about this place; their facilities are excellent, their clubhouses are sizable and modern while there is also a well-stocked club shop and a friendly atmosphere.
Last time we visited the fan wearing a replica Trinity home shirt bearing the words “I 8 BOSTON” on the back made my stay even more pleasurable.
The gong for Adambrid’s Best Chips also goes to Gainsborough Trinity.
At £1.50 a pop their freshly made chips are both very filling and great value for money.
Special plaudits must also go to Vauxhall Motors whose fab chunky spuds also clocked in at £1.50 a tray.
At 80p a go Ashington’s chips were the cheapest of the season but were nice and were presented in a big tray.
Eastwood Town, Harrogate Railway and Hinckley United should however immediately cease chip production.
The award for Best Coach Journey Sponsored By FatherBrid goes to Colwyn Bay.
The scenery on this long trip is fantastic while the seaside also comes in to view as you’re approaching the Welsh valleys.
A near full capacity coach made its way to Wales for this super journey earlier this season.
My Friendliest Club award goes to Ashington.
This Ebac Northern League First Division outfit are a credit to football.
They gave us an extremely warm welcome upon entering the turnstiles, everyone in the ground was friendly and many wished us good luck for the season.
It’s a great place to visit and I’d like to return the compliment by wishing our last FA Cup opponents good luck for the upcoming season and beyond.
That’s it for this week and indeed this season folks.
Thank you for all your support both to me and the team.
Here’s hoping we can enjoy another cracking campaign next time round and I look forward to seeing you all at the games.
