The Academy beat Gateshead 2-1 at Nethermoor today.
Here is the Academy's report from their Facebook page:
The Young Lions produced an outstanding performance this afternoon to beat Gateshead 2-1 at Nethermoor.
A full-strength side Gateshead travelled down from the North-East containing no-less than 4 of players who had experience in the National League club's 1st team. It was goal-less at half-time but the Young Lions had created the most chances and 'the Heed' didn't have an attempt at goal.
In the 2nd half the visitors came out with much more purpose and created a few good chances but in 53 mins it was the Lion Cubs who broke the deadlock.
Stephen Smith received the ball out wide and he delivered an excellent ball across the goal for Devonte Morton to calmly slide the ball past the Gateshead keeper.
However, the celebrations were short-lived as Gateshead equalised in 56 mins after a cpl of basic defending errors by the Young Lions.
Gateshead were now looking to finish the wounded lion cubs and created a couple of great chances but young U17's keeper Sam Whittington stood strong in goals.
As we reached the last stages of the game it was end to end and an exciting for the spectators. Then in 86 minutes as it looked like it was heading for a draw, the Young Lions took the lead.
Great work by Dev Morton and Stephen Smith saw the ball was crossed to the back post and Cassius Jules reacted first and toe-poked it beyond the Gateshead keeper. 2-1 Guiseley!
Gateshead pushed for their equaliser but they found the Academy defence marshalled by Josh Snowden and Will Wells on top form.
With seconds remaining a rasping shot goal bound strike was brilliantly touched round the post by big Sam and the Young Lions had beaten the league champions.
With one game remaining the Young Lions must take all three points to get take runners-up spot for the 3rd consecutive season.
