Our Unibond Premier Rivals...
No.7 Frickley Athletic
The Facts:
Where they play: GMB Stadium, Westfield Lane, South Elmsall, Pontefract, West Yorkshire, WF9 2EQ
Admission 2008-09:
Can't find it anywhere on their website, but it'll be about the same as ours, won't it? (Later: Ah, found it! It's a fairly whopping £8 for the waged, £5 for senior citizens and £3 for the spotty ickle schoolkids...).
Final league position last season:
14th, although the club's official website has a different slant on things. Claiming that they narrowly missed out on being crowned Premiership Champions, this complete rewrite of history has them only missing promotion after a thrilling penalty shoot-out against North Ferriby United who, one can only surmise, will be as surprised to hear about this as they are delighted seeing as they only narrowly missed relegation.
Odds at Coral's:
An almost generous 40/1.
Home Kit:
All blue with white bits.
Change Kit:
Can't find details of this anywhere (and I did look, honest...).
Manager:
Billy Heath.
Highest home attendance last season:
543 v Ossett Town
Lowest home attendance last season:
148 v Marine
Average home attendance last season:
271
Home gate v Guiseley last season:
335
Result at Frickley:
1-0 to Frickley in a game generally described as one of our worst performances of the entire season...
Result at Guiseley:
1-1 in an evening game on a really freezing night. Largely memorable for an hilarious display of histrionics frpm a beleaguered Frickley keeper whose wrath was finally capped by a last minute Guiseley goal when Aaron "I'm really a striker" Wilford latched on to a very undercooked backpass to leave the keeper completely stranded as he rounded him to slip it in the net. Those who witnessed the event will remember his ensuing reaction with almost unbridled joy!
Website:
www.frickleyafc.co.uk/
Forum:
www.frickleyafc.co.uk/ Within the club's main website, and ever so slightly dull. One fairly recent post described a fan's stroll though Wakefield market and tells us in almost breathless terms of how he chanced across a painting of the former Frickley Colliery....Nice.
Last few times v Guiseley:
In contrast to last season's fairly cheerless and dull encounters, the previous season's match at Nethermoor saw us really tonk 'em when we won about 5-1, but they actually played quite well that night and could have got a draw (that is, of course, if they hadn't let in five, which almost always sets you at a distinct disadvantage)...
News from the close season:
Hardly any news at all on the official Frickley website where the main piece of 'headline news' concerns a sponsorship link-up witha local financial brokerage firm, a very big report on Annual Frickley Golf Day, and a piece about a benefit match for one of the Frickley players, who was apparently quite ill but who is now, very thankfully, on the way to a full recovery.
The only way you get anywhere near any news of any real signings is by reading right through the 'player profile' pages on their site, and even then the most exciting of their signings seem to be a two or three lads from Avenue who'll you'll almost certainly not have heard of, and as for any others...errr...that's it...
Who are we likely to recognize?
Rob Pell, but that's really about it as regards ex-Guiseley denizens.
What we do think of them and/or how much do they annoy us?:
Well, it almost hurts me to have to say this, but I don't think they really annoy us because there's nothing there to get all that upset about, anyway. There's no reason to 'hate' them, and no real reason to fear them, and there's really nothing there to get too worked up about at all. They'll turn up at Fort Nethermoor this season (Isn't it great that we can almost say this season now?), run about a bit, make a bit of noise, tear around looking very serious and intent, and then we'll almost totally forget them unless someone actually mentions them again...
One other interesting titbit is that they also claim on their website to be 'The 13th biggest club in Yorkshire'. Not quite sure how they worked that out, or even if it's true, but it's certainly a mouthful and hardly a 'catchy' selling point to add to their official merchandise.
Likely prospects this season?:
Mid to lower table obscurity at the very best, and more likely to be fighting relegation for most of the year...
