Our Unibond Premier Rivals...
No. 10 KENDAL TOWN
The Facts:
Where they play:
Lakeland Radio Stadium (yes I know, but I’m sure the money came in handy), Parkside Road, Kendal, Cumbria, LA9 7BL (61 caravan-and-farm-machinery-infested miles from Nethermoor). It's the only away trip other than Avenue where the AA route doesn't channel you on to the motorway system; enjoy it, but give yourself plenty of time.
Admission 2008-09: Adults £7.00, OAPs £4.00, U-16s £1.00
When do we play them?
Tuesday September 2 at Parkside Road, and Saturday March 14 at Nethermoor, FA Trophy semi-final permitting.
Final league position last season:
11th, though only three points above the relegation places.
Odds at Coral’s: 40/1
Home Kit: Black-and-White Striped Shirts, White Shorts
Change Kit: Dunno. Anybody remember last season?
Manager: Lee Ashcroft (Player-Manager)
Highest home / away attendance last season: 392 / 731
Lowest home / away attendance last season: 222 / 108
Average home / away attendance last season: 275 / 282
Home gate v Guiseley last season: 331
Result at Parkside Road:
2-2 on September 4th, throwing away a two-goal lead in the last minute to drop our first points of the season. Terry Dolan described it as ‘feeling like a defeat’.
Result at Guiseley:
Thanks mainly to a blinding display by Piőtr Skiba, we sneaked a shaky 2-1 in our last game, which given a favourable result elsewhere would have seen us into the play-offs. Similarly, a rather more complicated set of scores could have seen Kendal relegated. So they were happier than us, really.

Fairly quiet, with fans showing a tendency to post only when there’s something to say. As of this afternoon, for example, there hasn’t been one comment on Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Ilkeston.
Last few games v Guiseley:
Took a bit of research, this one. Vaguely recall games against them in their 20th-century incarnations of Netherfield AFC and Netherfield Kendal. Since the turn of the Millennium we’ve played them twelve times in the Unibond Premier and First Divisions and only lost to them twice, both 2-1 in the 2002-03 season. The full record for that period reads P12 W5 D5 L2 G20-12 Pts20.
News from the close season:
Couldn’t find much. Alex Taylor has joined from promoted Fleetwood Town, and Gareth Arnison has decamped to Blue Square team Workington (or according to one source, RL club Workington Town). A rather disappointing pre-season had the tin hat put on it when they turned a 4-1 lead over a Sunderland XI into a 4-9 defeat.
Who are we likely to recognize?
Didn’t know anybody on their team photo, but I doubt their fans’d know anybody on ours. The geographical isolation of Cumberland/Westmorland/Cumbria or wherever (though they’d understandably see it the other way round) means that the paths between the local sides are well-trodden, with only occasional infusions of new blood from the body politic of Unibondland.
What we do think of them and/or how much do they annoy us?
Considering that we’re their closest rivals in the Division (yes, honestly), haven’t really noticed any animosity developing. We were a bit annoyed with them last September, but on reflection the town-centre road works that trashed our carefully-prepared route weren’t really the club’s fault; perhaps it’s an A65 thing. Annoying, too, that what could be an enjoyable weekend away in a beautiful part of the country keeps being banjaxed by the bloody fixtures computer, but I suppose it makes more sense than sending Boston there midweek.
Likely prospects this season:
Expectations don’t seem high, but they gave us two good games last season.
