An excellent win on the road in less than ideal conditions after travel problems on the way to Derbyshire. The game was done and dusted after just two minutes when Ible scored his third goal in four games after a mistake from Deeney. Kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes because of traffic on the M1 following an accident but the Lions looked sharp. The game never really got going in truth but Murphy did come close to doubling our lead with an header. Yates had the best chance for the hosts when he volleyed Johnston’s free kick into the building site behind. The second half followed a similar pattern, it was constantly disrupted by fouls, scuffles and everything else! Whitham nearly found Chippendale who was in a good position to score but Yates dashed in to smack the ball just wide of his own goal. Matlock best opportunity came with five minutes left when substitute Duhameau flashed a cross across the face of our goal. An excellent win on a difficult pitch to climb above Matlock in the table. Well played Guiseley! Onto Warrington away on Saturday. Come on Guiseley! AB

Ugly shapeless attritional match that will not live long in the memory, played on a difficult surface and poorly refereed which contributed to an increasingly fractious game which got out of control several times in the second half with unsightly brawls involving several players on two or three occasions. After Jameel Ible was on hand in the second minute to hook the loose ball over the line after the Matlock keeper dropped the ball from Smiths corner that was pretty much it for goalmouth action for the rest of the match. In fact I believe that was the only shot on target for either team in the entire match. Mason was a virtual spectator as Guiseley largely dominated possession without creating much offensively throughout the game. The midfield worked very hard to break up play and deny Matlock time on the ball and once again Courtney Meppen-Walters was superb in defence, well supported by Ible, Smith and Boateng. Poor game - great result, especially given the horrendous traffic problems on both the M1 and A1 which disrupted the arrival of players and fans. Another half a dozen bookings last night including all the usual suspects - Whelan, Daly, Ible. Suspensions looming for several players I reckon and that will play a part over the coming weeks.

Yeah it seems like suspensions are more likely to derail us than opposition teams. Big question for Paul is whether Spencer Harris is the man to cover those players or whether those intense fixtures will come a bit soon for him match fitness-wise.

For those not at the match - yes, those really were the highlights, there’s nothing missing, apart from the brawls! Their keeper clearly wasn’t fouled for the goal - he just fumbled the cross. Matlock manager’s comments are pretty reasonable and balanced in my view. The Matlock match report isn’t too far off - though Matlock players also played their part in ensuring it was an awful spectacle.

Definitely not one to be talked about over the years. I felt a little sorry for Alfie who was a subbed sub. I’m assuming it was tactical but hopefully it doesn’t knock the lad’s confidence. Equally Adam wasn’t subbed at half time but 3 minutes after. I’m either assuming Phillips gave instructions and these weren’t followed or again tactical. It is a team sport and no room for sentiment. We were guilty of that under the old regime so whilst fairly brutal he’s got us flying up the league.

The Matlock match report isn’t too far off - though Matlock players also played their part in ensuring it was an awful spectacle. I wasn't at this game but was this report written by a Mr A Partridge? It's full of his technique, such as handing out insincere praise ahead of snide criticism. "referee Waqar Ahmad, normally one of the best officials in the division, saw the match spiral out of his control." (Translation: the referee was at fault for everything, he was practically a Guiseley player) "the game was settled by an uncharacteristic error from goalkeeper Saul Deeney, who in his time at Matlock so far had been faultless." (Translation: Guiseley didn't score, we accidently let one in) "Ross Daly was the first in the book in the 20th minute for a blatant and petulant trip on Jorome Slew who had skipped beyond him with ease." (Translation: Ross Daly is a horrible big ogre who couldn't contain the amazing silky skills of Slew other than by nothing short of common assault) "Johnston was booked for fouling Whelan, taking one for the team as the second half got under way." (Translation: A heroic and morally justifiable foul - absolutely nothing in common with Ross Daly's above) "Matlock fell into the trap Phillips had set. What a pity therefore that Deeney’s error gave them the ideal boost to halt the game as a spectacle." (Translation: We lost, but needless to say we had the last laugh)

I don’t know what it is about them as they’re not unique, but something about their attention seeking and self aggrandising really grates on me.
They were so bad that they were beaten by an opponent who only had one shot on target all game, but all of their output suggests they only lost because of how bad we were.

Despite the result presumably Matlock were quite happy when they were winning games under Paul Phillips but when the tables are turned they fail to live up to their Gladiator nickname.
Fact is they had as many players booked as us and we scored from a basic error by their keeper, so a great three points for us and we move on while they slump into despondency.

Big question for Paul is whether Spencer Harris is the man to cover those players or whether those intense fixtures will come a bit soon for him match fitness-wise. I see Paul Phillips has signed Mark Lees, a defensive midfield player who started the season with Matlock but left in January for personal reasons relating to travelling from his home in Ashton. Smart signing I reckon - we are going to need cover for Whelan and Daly who must be very close to suspensions given the number of booking they have picked up recently.

I wish I could say I had an inkling of this at the time but I was just wondering whether Spencer could do what’s needed. He can play those positions but it’s a big step up to play two full games a week. Mark Lees is a good player from what I remember, certainly Matlock fans were sad to see him go, and a known quantity who should slot straight in. Looks like a clever signing - fits both Paul and Russ’ moulds too, Paul has characters he trusts and Russ loves a bargain from a lower division.
