It’s hard to believe that great performance/win at home v South Shields actually took place just a few weeks ago, going on recent performances/ results. Today’s defeat to Ashton summed up everything that has gone wrong since, with a player sent off too to put a cherry on top of the stale, inedible ‘cake’. Though, perhaps it’s really humble pie we’re being forced to eat! Okay, that red was harsh and should have been yellow, but it seems to sum up only too accurately how everything has gone, pear-shaped. (NB: No mention here of red faces and yellow streaks!) To carry on the colour/fruit theme, referees in this league continue to look more like lemons and when the full time whistle went the only sound that was appropriate was an enormous raspberry! Let’s hope next week’s game doesn’t offer up yet another banana skin, leaving us feeling as blue as tonight! It’s not sour grapes from me, honestly! I suppose it is ‘April Fools’ Day, though!

Worst team in the league on form, now as close to relegation as playoffs, makes us very likely to finish bottom half and not sure what value these games are for building for next season. Will just have to enjoy the social side of the final few games and hope for better next year.

A poor start to the moth with defeat on the road at Ashton United. The first half produced very few chances for either side and took a long time to really get going. Our best opportunities came through Smales-Braithwaite who was once again our most dangerous player. Benni saw a shot blocked and Chippendale came close too but Ashton’s defence stopped his effort testing Scott. Ible forced Scott into a save but it was a few minutes later when the hosts took the lead. McKay broke the deadlock when he reacted quickest to Ashton’s chance which hit the bar, the midfielder couldn’t miss from a few yards out. That was that to bring to an end a dull first half. The second half started much brighter for us, Cassidy going close on two occasions before Smales-Braithwaite forced Scott into a good save. But second later Thompson was there to double the home side’s lead when he pounced on a shot which hit the post. Ashton added a third but it was ruled out for offside before hitting the post again later on in the half. Bakkor had a great chance to pull one back but shot straight at Scott. Then Ible had an even better opportunity but could only find the side netting. With five minutes left Smales-Braithwaite’s afternoon ended early after he hacked down a counter attacking Ashton striker, the ref had the red out straight away despite it being far from goal, will be an interesting one to see back. It was the last major incident in another poor day on the road. Onto Stalybridge at home on Saturday. Come on Guiseley! AB

Rallyman I was being sarcastic rallyman, our biggest mistake/problem this season is how many we have brought in,embarrassing to have so many new players at a club, who’s responsible for bringing all these players in,it’s a ridiculous situation,3-4 loan players from academies is great if the players who come are up for it,I’ve never seen anything like the amount we’ve had

For once, I agree with the manager. The referee was the worst kind of inept. Never a free kick, and then never a corner in the build up to the goal. Ashton weren’t diving about but clearly figured out that if they went down in the vicinity of Jake Cassidy or Kallan Murphy they’d get the free kick, Every. Single. Time. And then sure why not compound an error strewn performance by sending off Braithwaite for the sort of foul you see in almost every game when a team is on the break, AND THEN call it violent conduct to make sure he’s out for three games. Refereeing at this level has been wonky at best but today it was reaching almost dangerous levels of ineptitude. The best you can say about the ref is that his crapness doesn’t excuse the fact that we didn't create enough, didn’t hold the ball well enough, and made poor decisions across the board. A Frustrating day, in an ever increasing collection of frustrating days…

Another frustrating afternoon. We had the better chances, but I think it came down to Ashton taking theirs and controlling the game more. I think we show individual glimpses of quality, evident through chances from Smailes-Braithwaite and Cassidy, Ible came close as well. But the difference was the fact that Ashton were a strong and cohesive unit, which we weren’t and that’s only inevitable given the player movement throughout the season. I do think that had our XI today been playing together for a year, we would have won today. That’s why pre season will be exciting, and I think we should all get together and look forward to another rollercoaster next season, hopefully a bit less turbulent than this one.

Another really poor performance today. It looks like the players have given up this season.
I saw Ross Daly having a go at a fan last week for calling out poor performances that day. I wonder why he thinks a team who has lost 5 of the last 6 games should be immune from criticism?

To be blunt, if we had been performing like we have in the last half dozen games, I don’t think it would have been at all certain Paul Philips would have been given the thumbs up for next season, and many more games/results like these and the thumbs will be twitching towards a downwards direction. On the match commentary, the commentator said some of the players “didn’t even look interested” and surely that has got to be absolutely unacceptable. PP needs to get the ‘ship’ steadied and fast. We were described in the club programme a few home matches ago by the Chair as “a very good side”, but that now looks a laughable statement to have made. We need to get a grip and start battling for every point. The players, the management owe it to the fans who turn up regularly, some away as well as home, not to embarrass us on Saturday as they have most certainly done recently. Today’s commentator for example sounded as if he was pretty fed up with what he was describing, varying between boredom and obvious annoyance, and couldn’t wait for the whole sorry debacle to end. After the final whistle he got off air noticeably ultra- fast! If we battle and get beaten by a better side okay, but giving up the ghost cannot ever be seen to be accepted! And the manager has to get this over to the team.

And the manager has to get this over to the team. To be honest I thought we played ok. We tested the Ashton goalkeeper (someone familiar from earlier this season). We were unlucky as the refereeing was bizarre to say the least. It wasn’t a corner (or free kick), prior to their first. We were dominating before they they scored on the counter attack. The BSB sending off was a disgrace. I hope we can appeal. We should give the managers time. I think a solid pre season and cohesive team will be important. I thought Paul spoke well after the match. Best is yet to come I think.

And the manager has to get this over to the team. 5 goals and 5 points from the past 8 games. It's relegation stuff. And the scorer of 4 of those goals is now banned. Season tickets were bought on wave of goodwill following the appointment of a club legend as manager. I don't know that the goodwill is going to be there this summer.
