Pre-season friendly v Spennymoor Town (home) 22/07/23
On a progressively worsening wet afternoon, Guiseley took part in quite an even contest versus Spennymoor Town, winning 1-0 through a first half goal. For the supporter, pre-season games like this don’t often offer too many clues as to what their opening competitive eleven will look like, bar some of the players we know well who will surely have a place in that side eg in our case-Chippendale. Today’s starting team was composed of no less than five trialists, which makes that point very well. But, it was good to be back at Nethermoor seeing the team in action once again and one thing is certain, which we already knew. And, that is that in the opening 2023/24 home league fixture the Guiseley side will look very, very different to the one that finished 2022/23. In his programme notes, the manager made it very clear, whatever their football skills, he had been decidedly unimpressed with the attitudes and spirit seen in many of those who wore the white/blue shirt last season. And, this explains why quite a few of them are no longer at Nethermoor. He has made these aspects a high priority in making his new signings and has even said (in the programme) he believes not only are we going to be promoted, but we can win the title, based on the squad he has now assembled. He has certainly set the bar high for himself, which many fans will be glad to see. We are going to have a lot of fun and excitement surely, in finding out what happens on our ‘journey’ between now and next spring. Everything to play for!

A good performance today in a tight game but one which we fully deserved to win. The Lions backline was made up of trialists with Meppen-Walters out injured and Ible, Kendall and Brown all on prebooked holidays. It didn't show though, they limited Spennymoor to a couple of half chances and nothing else in a game which we had more opportunities to break the deadlock. The only goal came when Chippendale went for a shot on the volley but sliced the ball backwards towards Tongue who, with the aid of a deflection, rifled a shot into the top corner. He looked eager for more and saw a shot from 25 yards out drift just past the post. Taylor had the visitors' best chance but his shot went just wide. In the second half Taberner had to pull off a great save from close range to preserve the clean sheet. Tongue nearly added a second but his free kick was well tipped over by the Moors keeper. All in all another good win and we more than matched our NLN opposition who are closing in on their season start in two weeks today. Well played Guiseley! Onto Scarborough at home on Tuesday night. Come on Guiseley! AB

Good workout for Guiseley yesterday. Thought our defence played really well and the trialists keeper played well on a difficult surface. Good performance against a well drilled Spennymoor team who have played quite a few friendlies already. Onwards and upwards.

Impressive performance against a well drilled Town side that produced a fully deserved victory. Have added some images and video from yesterday to the match report.
