….springs eternal?!!
Based on last season, Hyde may prove a tricky first league encounter. On the other hand, the Guiseley side is not the same as it was eg when we went down at home in last season’s Nethermoor league encounter. (Not a game to recall with pleasure for more than one reason!) Good luck Lions, let’s get our first point(s) on the board!

Really pleased to see Tongue confirmed as Captain. He looks a terrific asset and definitely has a “winners” attitude. High hopes for this season. I think this is perhaps the best squad (for the level of football being played) assembled for years, perhaps even as far back as Kitty (the year we lost to Halifax in playoffs)

There's some real class in the signings we've made. Tongue does look like a bit of a coup. I think he's a teacher as his day job(?).. feels like good credentials for captaincy.

Lge: Hyde 1 v Guiseley 1 Sat. 12/08/23
The general consensus from the commentary team was that it was a good point gained by the Lions against a good side. Playing in purple colours, Guiseley took the lead from an inswinging corner delivered by captain Tongue and scored by Ible. But, in the second half Hyde hit back, resulting from an inswinging corner of their own, to equalise. In that second 45mins, the game could have gone either way, though the final minutes saw Hyde looking the likelier team to score, thus hanging on for the point was a good result for the away side. It was pointed out by the microphone pair that the defence had held up well to pressure in this test and as Hyde were one of the better teams in this league in 2022/23 (and could well be again in 2023/24) this was a decent start to the Lions’ league campaign. Well done lads! Looking forward to the next game on Tuesday v Whitby!

A hard earned point picked up on the road today against a Hyde side who more than deserved their share of the spoils. The game got off to a quick start and Hyde were well on top coming close on a couple of occasions. Branagan was the first keeper forced into a save when Kendall's long range shot was easily gathered by the stopper. We had the best chance of the game just before the 20 minute mark when Tongue's free kick was flicked on by Denton to Chippendale but the midfielder couldn't find the target. Walker made two excellent blocks to deny the hosts, the first stopped a certain goal. After 38 minutes we smacked the bar through Pratt's volley from the edge of the box before Brown saw his effort on the rebound blocked. From the resulting corner we scored the first goal of the afternoon when Tongue's cross was headed home by Ible despite Branagan being at full stretch. Hyde reacted well to going behind and pushed for an equaliser just before the break and this continued in the second half. The hosts looked much sharper in the second 45 but it could have been oh so different. Tongue's cross just need a touch from Chippendale to result in a certain goal but the midfielder couldn't connect and the ball went away from danger. We had two big chances through Johnson, who was denied when one on one with Branagan, and Denton who headed well wide of the mark from a good position. Wade made a good save to stop Roscoe's header from finding the target but from a corner the hosts were level. Former Lion Bailey Thompson couldn't miss from two yards out and powered his header past Wade. Chippendale came close again but couldn't poke past Branagan who spilled the ball after it bounced around the box. The last chance went to Tongue, the midfielder hitting a very ambitious shot from 35 yards out just wide of the goal. Well played Guiseley! Onto Whitby Town at home on Tuesday. Come on Guiseley! AB

It’s a crazy opening run, we don’t get an easy game until Monday 28th (🫣) but based on last season I would assume that was a good point against a good side. I wasn’t there though!
Might be a while before we figure out how to get the goals coming, ie how best to use Denton, but for a first outing at least our pre-season optimism hasn’t been burst.

Good game between two well matched teams. Guiseley rode their luck a bit but more or less matched Hyde step for step. Tapered off toward the end as the pace of the game caught up with a few legs more used to the pre season friendlies. Both these teams will improve - I’m convinced that last season we’d have lost that game, but the switch to the back four and some sheer bloody mindedness got us a deserved point. Wouldn’t you know Bailey Thompson would turn up though?! Ah well. Decent away point, more reasons to be cheerful, and a home game on Tuesday. I’ll take that.

Decent performance and excellent away day with approximately 50 Guiseley fans there including 34 on the Supporters bus.
A promising start all around.

It is always disappointing when you lose a lead but I think on balance that is a good result for us. Hyde looked decent to me and I expect them to finish at the right end of the table again this season.
After a slow start I thought we regrouped well, Tom Pratt hit the bar from a well worked effort and Ible rose to score from the subsequent corner. Johnson missed a great chance through on goal early in the second which might have proved enough to secure three pounts, but I think he made a positive contribution when he came on.
Hyde equalised from a corner, with BaileyThompson seeming to have a free header. I was fearing they would then go onto find a winner, they had a very tricky winger who caused problems throughout the match, a new signing from Wycombe apparently.
So on balance a decent result but that being said, I think it’s now important we back it up with two good results in the upcoming home matches. I think there is definitely a strong team in there somewhere and as Phillips said in his interview, perhaps they need time to gel as a team.

I thought that yesterday's hard earned point was a solid enough start to the season against decent opposition, who you would expect to be competing towards the top end of the league. There were some promising individual performances, including the returning Gabriel Johnson, who gave us some attacking impetus that was somewhat lacking before his introduction and looked lively. This season's squad seems to have a collective resilience about it and the ability to dig in when required, which will hopefully stand us in good stead as the season progresses. Let's hope that we can keep a reasonably settled squad together without too many comings and goings, which usually only causes unhelpful disruption. As nearly all teams will say, a goal scoring centre forward would be a nice addition though if we are serious about a promotion push. I wouldn't mind seeing Callum Chippendale being given a bit more offensive freedom to create danger in the final third wheneverpossible. And what is going on with the goalkeeping situation, as we seem to have two signed on number ones now rather than having an understudy? The goalkeeper in the Hyde social club didn't appear to be overly amused with his exclusion from the matchday squad. Anyway, the early season optimism is still there and long may it continue.

I would’ve thought there are only two reasons to sign Wade at the point we did - you think he’s so good that we’ll only be able to hold onto him briefly, or you want to move your existing keeper on.

I suspect that if we thought Brad Wade was available when Mason left then we'd have signed him at that point, so I guess something else has fallen through for him. But the manager was bawling out Taberner in the first half of the first friendly and threatening to stick and outfield player in goal. I wonder if Brad has also been told to put the ball on Denton's head every time he gets it?

The GK issue has been odd. Think Troll is right. I hope we let Taberner leave (on loan) - would seem unfair to retain him particularly if we ain’t picking a GK on the bench. My (slight) worry with Brad is he’ll prove too good for this level and be gone before the end of the season…
