Paul will also be taking bookings for the trips to Gainsborough and Lancaster tonight, see him at the desk in the clubhouse or just give him a call to book. AB

Sooo excited! My season ended in mid-March last year when I went to watch Englands U-21s play rather than watch Guiseley and caught Covid.. it seems like forever since I've seen live football.
And we've recruited well and got what looks like a squad that can push the top end of the table.. in fact I'm calling it now, we're winning the league this year (might be getting a bit giddy.. but that's what right now is about, optimism with no need to ground it in reality).

Noticed tonight’s home programme covers the match v Whitby as well as Saturday’s home game. Not aware this has been done in the past, but it maybe makes economic sense these days. Previously, unless I’ve got it wrong, only pre-season match programmes covered more than one match and every weekend and mid-week game had its own programme. But, unless the team is playing a team bringing a decent support, a number of unsold issues end up in the ‘bin’ in the club shop, thus maybe that can be reduced with this move.
(NB: Someone at the match told me this has been done in the past.)

Bit of a wake up call tonight. Had chances but Whitby looked slicker, fitter and more purposeful.
Early days and a quick chance to put it right on Saturday.

Unfortunately we defended poorly. Their goals and chances were often falling because of a man left completely unmarked. I think a lack of experience at the back wasn't helping. Hopefully have CMW back ASAP.
It's tempting to blame the route one football. They looked much better when they got it down and played in the last ten minutes. I think perhaps just a bad day at the office though and they had their chances to make it a different story.
Go again Saturday!

Guiseley 1 v Whitby Town 3 Tues. 15/08/23
No complaints about this result-Whitby were the better side and deserved to win comfortably. In the second half, after the Lions had gone 0-3 down, they had a period of urgency which included a scrappy goalmouth scrambled goal with the Tom Denton foot. Another might have gone in from a Johnson inswinging corner and at 2-3, who knows what might have happened. But, though the Lions did have some chances at various points in the match, Whitby looked in control for most of the game and played the better football. Saturday offers a quick chance to make up for this reverse. Let’s hope we take it!

Agreed Whitby looked much the stronger side from the off so no complaints there but our very naive game plan was easy to see, let's hope that this is not all we have in the locker. We have in this squad strong experienced players who can I feel given the permission, change the shape of the game whilst it is underway and I would therefore hope that this is something we in future see rather than route one which nobody wants to see.

Oh dear. Same start as last season at home. Unbeaten in pre-season again means nothing when you are outplayed for 60 mins & find yourself 0-3. Yes we rallied after that & got a scrabbled goal back, but being honest, that was more down to Whitby easing off.
After our goal their manager had a "word" with his players & Whitby looked pretty comfortable there after.
Worse for me was the huff ball in the first half which Whitby coped with ease. Yes Johnson hit the bar, but not much else.
Its only the 2nd game so plenty of time to turn it around starting on Sat, but a much better performance is needed.

Can’t believe I let pre-season suck me in again, even after last year.

Less said about that the better, I think. Very few positives, very little to get enthusiastic about. Hopefully just an off day and not the way they're going to play all season. The few good points for me were decent performances from Ashman, Chippendale and Johnson. The rest was pretty depressing. There's not much point in signing good players if all you do is get them to kick the ball in the air for 90 minutes.

Somebody mentioned above about ‘hoof ball’ and I wonder when you have a very tall no 9 up front there’s more of an inclination to punt the ball up front in ‘hit and hope’ the big striker will make ‘something’ happen. TD does make use of his height creatively at times but last night the Whitby defenders aggressively challenged him and kept his aerial threat to the minimum. (Ironically, he got a goal with his foot.) And, where he is a menace in the air, on the ground in terms of speed and movement TD is less so. I would like to see Kallan Murphy as a regular in the team with (or even without) TD. KM’s movement and terrier-like approach can often be effective and when he has come on as a sub, it has often been a big positive.

Denton’s linkup play was really good at times last night when there were people moving around him. He’s one of the few players you’ll see at this level who can frequently make a first time pass on receiving the ball. (Case in point - we only raised the tempo like that a handful of times last night)
But I have to admit I couldn’t really tell what the attacking plan was yesterday - I’m sure it can’t just be to aim for Denton’s head.

There were glaring weaknesses from front to back yesterday - it very much had the feel of a group of players still getting to know each other. The goals we conceded were poor defensively, we failed to get in behind the Whitby defence and we completely failed to get any control in midfield, meaning we really struggled to keep hold of the ball. Hoping the return of Prince and Courtney will provide a more solid base. Still early days.

I'm not sure that I agree that it long ball/hit and hope. They were playing very direct passes, sometimes out wide but often aimed at Denton's head with the aim for the busy midfielders to get around him and pick up the flick ons. The aim should be then to play football around their box. It was occasionally successful. Denton looks like he might be the best player I've seen at Guiseley for playing that role. This was why Tongue was dropping back into the defence so often to pick up the ball and ping those passes and why last season when we had CMW beautifully caressing 60 yard diagonal balls with the outside of his boot it looked much less like hoofball.
Problem was, it wasn't working last night and there was no plan B. Whitby swept up almost all the second balls and countered very well. We defended poorly leaving men unmarked far too often and got punished for it.
It looked like some of the young lads lacked confidence. Conway looks a really decent player at times but then sometimes lost the ball really cheaply in dangerous areas. It looked a bit like nerves to me. Similar with both fullbacks.
