The problem with the long ball was that it often did not seem to be aimed at Denton's head at all. A lot of them were actually perfect for him to run onto, in behind the defence. If only he could run. Most of the rest of them seemed to bounce over him. There were a couple of useful flick ons, but mostly it was all very easy for the Whitby defence.
As mentioned by "leftwinger" above, the long ball to Denton should be the plan B, not the only option. Far better to start with Murphy and try to play the ball into feet. If it must go long then better to drop it behind a high line and get Johnson running onto it. The trouble with that is there's no pace anywhere else in the team and he'll end up isolated.
It's far too early to catastrophise, but it's got the feel of a management that's signed good players without thinking enough about how they fit together. The lack of pace is a particular concern.

Think we showed glimpses of what we are about last night but agree with others that we also ought to be playing through the midfield where Liam Tongue, Callum Chippendale and Leigh Whelan ought to be running the show. Denton is an inteligent football with his lay-offs but we need to anticipate his intentions and maybe that is just a matter of time after just two games?

Whitby also had a tall centre forward but he was employed right across the front line to better affect and had colleagues who found the right space to have the lay offs. Lets not forget that finding space is a skill and we need to have a couple of players who can provide. At the moment most of our passes go to marked men. Onwards and upwards.

Whitby took full advantage of some slack marking to slam home three goals at Nethermoor last night. We got off to a really bright start and Ible will feel a touch unlucky to not have scored two goals in two matches when his shot from close range was somehow stopped by Bland. Just ten minutes later and the visitors were in front, a cross from the right hand side found Simpson unmarked at the back post and the tall striker couldn't miss. We nearly equalised straight away when Johnson's header crashed off the cross bar but up the other end and Whitby were nearly back in front. A rare mistake from Wade saw the ball slip through his fingers and go out from a corner, nothing came from it though. It was 2-0 just before half-time when former Lion Gratton struck in a similar fashion to the opening goal of the night. We made a change at HT taking off Kendall for Stacey but it had little affect with Whitby 3-0 up after just ten second half minutes. Simpson was allowed far too much space on the edge of our area and his pass teed up Shepherd who found an unmarked Rowe at the backpost with a good cross and the captain slotted home. Nine minutes later we had pulled one back after a few scrambles just minutes before Denton kept his cool to slot precisely through a myriad of bodies to make it 3-1. This sparked a swift change in the game as we were the ones pushing but it didn't last for long as the diligent visitors got their shape back and saw out the win. Onto Basford United at home on Saturday. Come on Guiseley! AB

We’ve got all these energetic midfielders that are pacey, and good on the ball. We have been at our best when moving the ball quickly around. We’ve looked far more solid with a back four than trying to make players who aren’t wing backs play wing back. Let’s see if tomorrow we play the formation for the players we have. After all, we’ve seen enough square pegs in round holes over the last couple of years.
