Lge. Gainsborough Trinity 4 v Guiseley 0 Tues. 22/08/23
*Our captain is crocked. *Our goalkeeper makes another blunder leading to a lost goal. *One of our full backs sees red (literally) *The usually reliable CMW (making a comeback!) is guilty of a howler leading to another lost goal. *We’re now in the bottom four…with the team we beat (Basford) on Saturday at the very bottom. * But….on the bright side, we had (the first) 30 mins. of good play……..before the rest of the game turned into a ‘disaster’!
The co-radio commentator said, “Everything that could go wrong in this game, did go wrong!” The commentator said with three minutes to go,”Thank goodness it’s nearly over”
But….don’t worry…we’re only playing Lancaster City away next…who beat Macclesfield Town 3-0 tonight! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!

Not at the game tonight and didn't listen to it either, unusual for me,but after the whole of last season and the uninspiring start to this I quite frankly don't think I missed a thing. I again purchased my season ticket thinking Mr.Phillips and Mr.Oneill will be supported by the directors in the close season to bring in players they want and to get rid of players who don't fit their plans and generally I think that I'm right but am now pondering on just what that plan is. On paper this squad not just team should be a match for anyone so why is it not gelling why are they not just appearing to be able to co ordinate play on the pitch. I hear Mr.Phillips is a hard task master who brokes no dissent but why bring in solid experienced knowledgeable players and then proceed to not allow them to use all of that and have a voice. Good managers use everything and everyone at their disposal to come up with solutions to problems and we have a problem.

Playing good football and dominating the first thirty minutes is all well and good but then shipping four goals and having a player sent off is all about discipline and that to me comes from the management. One win from four and nine goals conceded does not exactly fill me with confidence. Still things can only get better, can't they?

Couldn’t make the game but the opinion of several who travelled was it wasn’t a 0-4 performance.
My concern is more the make up of the team which looks like it will grind out results if we get the first goal but will struggle if chasing the game like tonight and v Whitby. In short we need a bit more flair in midfield.
Early days and at least 4 points from our next two games will steady the ship.

From the pre season programme: Phillips - "I think we can win the league." Chairman - "Should.. secure our well deserved return to the National League North."
We've got a squad made up of players who Phillips didn't get promoted before, or who helped O'Neil to the bottom end of the NLN, or who have been released by one of O'Neill's mates.
Hearing we played well the first 30 last night. Didn't play well the first 30 on Saturday. It's our 6th season of O'Neill and we've played well for 90 minutes on a handful of occasions.
Won 1 in 4 this season, finished last season winning 3 in 12.
It's all change, but nothing changes.

Also didn't go last night & didn't listen to commentary, but 1-0 down in first half, well goals get conceded no panic. Then 39mins (?) Reece is sent off & we ship 2 more goals before the end of the first half. 10 men & 3-0 down is game over for second half. One could say we did OK to only concede another goal in 45 second half mins, but it's not looking good so far.
There are players to return though so no panic after 4 games, but I didn't expect us to be in the relegation zone either. As someone said, Lancaster away next who beat Macclesfield last night. We need to play a lot better on Sat to bring anything back across the Pennines.
Stranger things have happened in football though so who knows.

A quick little fact- Danny Ellis was given 18 league matches last season before he was sacked. His record- W- 6, D- 4, L- 8
Paul Phillips’ record from his last 18 league matches- W- 5, D- 4, L- 9
I am not suggesting the need for anything and there are of course some caveats, such as Phillips’ results being over two seasons and he has only recently built his own squad. Just an interesting comparison….

The chair and manager have somewhat boxed themselves in, leaving themselves hostages to fortune. By saying that we would win the league or at least get promotion, the bar was set at its highest by PP himself, in a job where results dictate the managerial future. And in writing in the first programme of the season, words to the effect, we won’t have a season like last, the Chair also left himself little wriggle room.. We may well soon recover, start gelling better as a team, and go on an amazing run of successful performances. But, the pressure has already been applied and fan expectation heightened.

I don’t think we’re in the market to win the league but we should absolutely be in the playoffs come April with the squad we’ve got. A slow start is a slow start but that’s all we can afford.

A strange game last night in that whilst we weren't particularly great, we weren't all that bad either! We started off ok and had some good chances, not as good as the ones we missed in the opening three matches of the season but Johnson forced Wharton into an early stop and Johnson and Walker saw efforts blocked. Tongue was withdrawn very early on after a late and heavy challenge from Hardy on the midfielder saw his evening end. Then Johnson shot from 30 yards out for the hosts and scored with the ball skimming through Wade's hands in goal. Seven minutes later we should have been level but Denton saw his header come back off the post from inside the six yard box. The ball was cleared and Kendall was sent off for a late challenge before the hosts then made it 2-0 two minutes later when Flint smashed the ball home after pinball in our area. Hardy nearly made it 3-0 before HT when his shot flashed across the face of our goal, it just needed a touch but there was no one there in Trinity blue to convert. Ible head a good chance too when a deep corner came off him and dropped just wide of the goal, it was hard for the number five to see the ball as it dropped over the shoulder of a home defender. Then deep in injury time a long ball forward went over Whelan's head and found Poulter who chipped over Wade who had dashed off his line to stop the danger. The second half was fairly pedestrian but we did have three quick opportunities when Ible headed straight at Wharton, Walker forced the home stopper into a save at his near post and Johnson saw an effort blocked. Wharton made his first real save of the night when Johnson was played through on goal but the midfielder couldn't find a way past the keeper with a powerful shot. With four minutes left it was 4-0, Meppen-Walters lost possession in the middle of the pard and Goodman finished well to cap of a good evening for Gainsborough. It was the last action of a poor night for the Lions. Onto Lancaster on Saturday. Come on Guiseley! AB

Wasn’t there Vs Basford and didn’t go or listen last night thanks to the gift that just keep giving (COVID) which probably isn’t the best position to give thoughts but here goes…. I still believe this is a good squad and I think we are under-performing in the games so far. We clearly miss Prince and CMW. Is a 3-5-2 possible without these players? I know the manager thinks so but our squad doesn’t necessarily support this formation. Who is our RWB? On paper, Dyche (fit but not picked), Whelan, Brown or Walker. Certainly not Chips. The Xfer merry-go-round has begun again. Why did we bring in the kid from Grimsby and not give Pratt or Murphy a chance who’ve played through pre-season. Now we’ve let Bailey and Miguel leave whilst Tongue is now injured so more new players before the weekend. And given PP’s comments re Brad W, can we expect another GK before long? So win the next 3 and life will look a lot different but continue losing and we’ll be heading to new leadership territory. After hearing Kitty’s interview after Basford and the wonderful way he spoke of Family B, you can’t help wonder what would have happened if he’d stayed after Alfreton. One thing for sure is I think he’d relish our current squad….

I don’t think it excuses the performance but how on earth is this not a colour clash? I wasn’t there so maybe it looked different in real life, but blue v purple seems too close to me, especially when we’ve a white kit right there… m.facebook.com/groups/TheNPL/permalink/10169438707955725/

I didn't see the game, and it's still very early days, but I think there have been a number of warning lights flashing about this manager for a while, and they're certainly not going away. Last season he was justified in claiming that he didn't have his own players (though his best run of form came before he'd had chance to bring in however many hundreds of players he did). This season he simply doesn't have that excuse, and things aren't looking any better.
I'm willing to cut him some slack, as it is still very early, and he does have key players out, but all the recruitment so far has looked very much like a case of bringing in a number of good players with little or no regard given to how they fit together as a team. On top of that, rather than giving the players a chance to gel and learn the system (is there a system? I'm not sure "kick it hard in the air" really counts as a system), he's chopping and changing the players and formation every game.
As far as I can tell from my position on the sidelines, we've got an extremely limited manager with zero tactical awareness and no way of changing things other than shouting and then replacing people. I don't know what he does when that doesn't work either.
Hopefully I'm wrong and good performances are just around the corner, but I'm not impressed at the moment. I at least liked what Ellis and Forrest were trying to do and they seemed like nice people.
