GUISELEY 0 v Ashton United 1 Sat. 23 Sept. 2023
My first thoughts, after watching the first half can be summed in two words, ‘poor stuff’ …from both sides’! The first 45 mins. was followed by much the same in the second, with Ashton being fortunate to claim a (what could have been-‘I’d like a second look’-a soft?) penalty, which secured the three points. Looking at these two sides and their teams/performances, today, it’s hard to imagine either securing promotion or even troubling those pushing to move up a level. Granted we still have three (or four?) players missing, but when thinking about the Lions’ MOTM, it was difficult to think of anybody deserving of that award (though Tom Denton actually got it!) I think the Chair and Guiseley board have got a big job on, getting a manager in who can make a difference with these players. But, we need one and ASAP. This was an uninspiring 93/94 mins. and nothing looked to have changed from the last time I watched the Lions. A very negative post, I will concede, but this game was not one to encourage, reassure or dispel many of the doubts and worries that have been shared on here by a number of other fans as well as myself. Many, seem to think we have a good squad, but have had poor management of these players. I remain to be convinced about the latter now the former has gone.
NB: The top six in the table all won, whilst of the bottom seven, six of those lost! WE are now seventh from bottom!

Worryingly this squad reminds me of the squad that got relegated from the NLN.
Individually you wouldn’t say anyone was an obvious weak link or not pulling their weight but collectively they are lightweight, lacking flair and primed to be picked off by opponents. Once we go behind it’s game over.
I thought Ashton played with more purpose and looked fitter.

Best football I’ve seen us play this season, but sadly they were just a bit better than us all over the pitch.
Need a bit more creativity/quality going forwards and maybe tweak the backline a bit with some more experience and, most importantly, learn how to win again rather than just coming close.

Like others have said very disappointing game/performance again today. Lots of huff & puff but no really quality and we didn't put Ashton under enough pressure. From memory (I could be wrong) we didn't have a shot on target all game which is pretty terrible. Also thought apart from Gabby subs were too late.
Hopefully a big improvement at Morpeth on Tuesday night ( my first away game of season).

A disappointing start to Liam Tongue's temporary spell as manager as we fell to a 1-0 defeat to Ashton United. The visitors had the better of the first half and wasted three or four good opportunities when really they should have taken the lead. Battersby made a good stop low down to his left whilst two one on ones were fired wide. Chippendale did have an opportunity to break the deadlock but it was a rare attack from the home side. Ashton had several other chances in the half but failed to take them and the game was there for both sides to win in the second half. Ten minutes into the second 45 Byrne converted from the spot to strike the only goal of the afternoon. We came closest to scoring in the second half when Denton's header was cleared off of the line with the visiting keeper beaten. Chippendale curled another shot wide and Denton couldn't react quickly enough when a corner took a deflection and fell to his head. Plenty of effort but we couldn't find a goal to have a share of the spoils. We move on to Tuesday night's trip to Morpeth Town. Come on Guiseley! AB

Really disappointed with our performance today. Had hoped we would see a reaction to PPs departure but we seem to have a group of individual talents who for whatever reasons have not gelled as a team and we lacked the consistency to make our mark on the result today. Ashton played direct flowing football and whether we agree with the penalty decision or not, they were the better side.
It’s now up to the Directors to carefully choose the right manager for our club this time, with a current proven track record, who can lift the performance of the players and the spirits of the supporters.

We watched today’s game from different places but I agree with your summary. I think Liam has done a great job in organising the team under difficult circumstances. Denton was excellent, won most headers, but it didn’t quite get just yet. Some good performances around the pitch too. I think Ashton are a side who will kick on.

Not much positive to take from yesterday’s performance. Guiseley looked reasonably well organised and battled hard but as others have said Ashton were just a bit better all over the pitch. Definitely nowhere near our worst performance of the season and it looks like a narrow defeat on paper but in truth Ashton had nearly all the decent chances, should have been at least 2 goals to the good at half time and won the game comfortably. Once again we were blunt in the final third - Murphy’s second half header that was cleared off the line was I think our only shot on target in the entire match. I can only assume the man of the match was chosen by Tom Denton’s Mum - yes he won a few headers but that was all and his lack of mobility is a big issue for me. I would have the entire back five including Battersby ahead of him for their last ditch defending with Walker the standout and the actual MoM was Prince Ekpolo who was superb in midfield - he looks comfortably our best player at the moment.
Hopefully we will have a new manager by the weekend. It’s going to be a tough job for whoever takes it on. We do have some decent players (including several who were unavailable yesterday) but not a decent team and we need several additions, particularly in the forward line to be competitive. I said pre season that I couldn’t see where the goals were coming from and 10 goals in 10 matches, with one goal or less scored in six out of ten matches seems to prove the point. Still more than three quarters of the season to go so time to turn things around and it’s definitely possible with the right coaching, tactical nous and a few new faces in the squad. I suspect the next month or so may define the season.

I was also surprised to see Denton getting the MOM - he won a few headers but contributed little else. Prince was definitely my choice for MOM. As for the game itself it was another game with little for the fans to cheer. Other than one attempt cleared off the line we created no chances of note and the 0-1 scoreline flattered us in my opinion. We could have been 2 or 3 down at halftime. For me, Gabriel Johnson should be starting over Denton. He is able to put the work in that Denton can't and looks more of a threat. Sadly I think we are stuck with continued disruption for the next month or so. Whoever takes the hotseat they will need a month or two to put their stamp on the team and tactics so realistically we could be closing in on Christmas before we really start to see a change in performances.

I thought Denton was excellent in defence and attack. Won everything. Right choice for MoM Ekpolo was good but lost possession dangerously 2 or 3 times which is not like him. As ever we all see things differently

Well once again we've seen a lacklustre performance from Guiseley who don't seem to have a way of creating anything in the last third of the field that might give us a goal scoring opportunity. It's hard to finger point any player in particular but I don't see where the goals are going to come from. The previous manager had a bad habit of constantly challenging referees and linesman decisions, well I'm afraid the caretaker manager has continued the unsavoury habit.Guiseley AFC have got a proud history, let's hope the board make the correct choise of manager and take the club forward and make other teams coming to Nethermoor going away with nothing more than a cup of tea at half time instead of three points..
