Lge: Morpeth Town 1 v GUISELEY 1 Tuesday 26 Sept. 2023
Guiseley were denied what would have been a very welcome and much needed away win and three points to boost their position, by a last gasp equaliser by Morpeth. The first half had seen chances for both sides with the home team having the better of things overall. But, at the start of the second 45 minutes, the Lions, with Gabriel Johnson coming on as a substitute, began to heap some of their own strong pressure on the Morpeth goal. Two penalty claims ensued, (involving Johnson) the second of which looked very strong indeed. But, neither were given. But, on 77 minutes,Reece Kendall put the Lions into the lead and with only 13 minutes left on the clock, things began to look very positive for Guiseley and the fans who had made the trip up north. (This, particularly after a subsequent MT red card!) Even at 90 minutes the Lions were still in the lead, but into added time, as the game was close to the final whistle with time petering out, Morpeth got their equaliser.
(Other?) Main talking point of the night would likely be the end of Ratcliffe’s perfect record as they went down to a 3-2 defeat by Marine.

Would have taken a point at the start of the game and even more so at half time as Morpeth should have been at keast a couple of goals good. But second half was more even and arguably we were the better side so to take the lead on 77 mins only for Morpeth to equalise with the last kick of the game was hard to take especially as they had been reduced to 10 men a few mins before.

Luck just isn’t on our side at the moment! We need to be able to defend our position better when we are ahead, particularly against ten men! From our performance in the second half we deserved the win . To lose it in the final minutes was a real blow!

So close to that win that might just spark a revival and a boost to morale for players and supporters alike.
If this proves to be Liam Tongue’s last game as caretaker manager he deserves credit for stepping up and getting on with it in a professional manner. Hopefully he will back on the field soon playing further forward than he was previously.

Oh so near yet so far from a precious win on the road last night. It was two completely different halves from the Lions with Morpeth rampant in the first 45 and the second half saw us on top with the odd Morpeth chance thrown in there. Hodgson could have bagged himself a first half hattrick for better finishing and Battersby not being in his way but the striker wasted four good chances. Three shots drifted wide and Battersby saved another from the number 9 who was linking up well with Foalle on the right hand side of the pitch. Foalle was key to Morpeth's play all night and the winger himself forced Battersby into a good low save. We had a couple of openings ourselves, the first being a close call when Chippendale nearly beat Lowson to the ball after a mistake from the hosts and Murphy who worked himself into a good position but could only shoot wide. The second half saw the tables turned and we were well on top, half time sub Johnson firing an overhead kick just over the bar four minutes in. Brown was next to get a chance but he couldn't get his feat sorted out and his shot from a narrow angle at the near post went wide. Brown also saw a header from close range blocked and on the rebound Whelan's effort was also cleared away. Andy Johnson came off the bench for the hosts and nearly made an immediate impact but he couldn't get the better of Battersby who saved his shot well. Murphy then fired wide up the other end after receiving the ball from a throw-in and one minute later the hosts had an opportunity to break the deadlock but Noble shot wide of the goal. Johnson then forced Lowson into his first real save of the night, the keeper got his finger tips on to the header. He couldn't keep us out for long though and Kendall put us in front after our best spell in the game which saw us have three corners and numerous shots at goal. Whelan's cross beat everyone in the box and Kendall slotted past Lowson for his first Guiseley goal, a neat finish from the defender. 10 minutes later Morpeth were down to ten when Kendall fell onto the ball and Noble rushed in with two silly challenges where he kicked Kendall in the process, the ref brandished a straight red. Batterbsy then pulled off a sensational save in injury time when a header from close range was palmed away. He couldn't keep Morpeth out any longer though, Hodgson eventually took a chance after a scramble in the box with one of the last kicks of the game. It felt like a kick in the guts but was also a fair representation of the game, it was much more even in the second half than it was in the first. Well played lads! Onto Ilkley Town at home in the West Riding County Cup on Tuesday night. Come on Guiseley! AB

I didn’t get to go on Tuesday. Highlights are hard to judge from but two things stand out to me having just watched them (thanks as ever to Adam for his diligent curation of all coverage).
First, it looked as though we created some good chances in that second half. Gabriel Johnson got into some good positions, and their keeper made some good saves. It looked a clear cut handball in the box just prior to the goal so thank goodness we scored are weren’t left bemoaning another penalty incident (the Ashton one looks worse and worse on playback).
Second, the Morpeth red card incident is not fully visible as it’s not fully visible from the camera angle. From what you can see it looks really really unpleasant and the lads did well not to respond. Thankfully the referee was straight onto it.
