GUISELEY 10 (TEN) v ILKLEY TOWN 1 West Riding County Cup : Tues. 03/10/23
The Lions were given ample chances here to fine-tune their attacking skills and made full use of the frequent opportunities. The final score betrays the difference between the two levels at which both these teams function. Tom Denton and Gabriel Johnson both had excellent scoring outings and the only consolation for Ilkley was that the final score wasn’t even more emphatic, considering they were seven to one down at half time. No match the Lions will play in 2023/24 will be easier and as one-sided as this. But, hopefully, this may contribute positively in terms of confidence-building, to future attacking play in upcoming games.

Good workout for the Lions and plenty of goals scored and chances created which may be just what we needed before the FA Trophy tie at Gainsborough on Saturday. Images and videos here

Denton down the middle, wasn't rocket science and last night's game showed what he can do when you play to his strenghts, yes he had an an easy night of it which he will not find in the league, but as arguably the tallest player on the pitch in any game, defenders will not like him receiving crosses into the box, big 👍 from me

And we can tell our grandchildren that we saw Prince Ekpolo score a goal!

Great result for the team which will have provided some much needed confidence for the players. Expected to win the game by a few goals and the lads duly delivered.
Despite it not being very high profile, the WRCC is our best chance of winning something. Given our push for a playoff place and promotion is falling away i’d like to see us put a strong team out in this competition and hopefully give the fans something to celebrate at the end of the season

An emphatic victory last night to secure our place in the second round of the County Cup. It could have been oh so different had Wade not dealt well with a shot from Gonzalez in the first minute but from there it was all the Lions. We scored two in the opening ten minutes, Johnson finishing off a Devine cross before Valsau scored straight from a corner. Ilkley did pull one back through Hunt's good finish from the edge of the box but it was all the visitors offered on a night where you could tell the class between the two sides. Denton restored the two goal cushion with a well taken finish for his first of the night. Pratt scored his first home goal with just over ten minutes left of the half as he prodded Denton's header into the net. Then a rare collectors item, Ekpolo fired in for his first Guiseley goal, he's come close in the past but there was no stopping this effort as the midfielder made it 5-1. In the last eight minutes Johnson added a sixth before he assisted the seventh Lions goal of the night as Denton added more gloss to the scoreline. It took us a bit of time to extend the lead in the second half but we didn't take our foot off the gas and added three more goals to our tally. Denton claiming his third with a trademark header after 67 minutes before Johnson got his hat trick two minutes later to edge us closer to double figures. Then Johnson got his fourth touching home Brown's cross after an block by the visiting keeper. All in all a comfortable win as Ilkley's 'shocking pink' kit failed to close the gap. Well played Guiseley! Onto Gainsborough on Saturday in the FA Trophy. Come on Guiseley! AB

I have to say, despite wanting my team(s) to win, I don’t particularly enjoying seeing lesser opponents humiliated Ie losing in double figures. I felt sorry for Ilkley, whose players probably wished they were anywhere but on the Nethermoor pitch after half time. That said, hopefully the Lions will take their shooting boots into the up-coming league matches when they’re meeting teams of their own ‘size.’
