Need to learn how to win, and so it was vital to see that game out. (Truth is, we should’ve been miles out of sight)
Hopefully these results help build a bit of confidence before the new manager arrives.
Johnson and Denton will score 15+ each easily if they stay fit and we figure out a way to get them both in the team without being lightweight in midfield.
Visitors scored with two great finishes but looked like they’ll be struggling again this season.

LGE: GUISELEY 3 v ATHERTON COLLIERIES 2-TUESDAY 10 OCTOBER
If there had been some ‘neutrals’ at this game, they would have felt they got their moneys’ worth in the first 45 minutes for sure. Exciting, five goals, and two comebacks, there was plenty to see. Yet, for the supporters of the two teams, it was more likely to have left them feeling they had gone through a mixture of emotions, involving disappointment as well as elation.
The Lions started brightly and looked very purposeful and their successful attacking approach meant most of the play at the start was in the away side’s half, close to goal. The first actual goal the home team got, by Tom Denton, could easily have been their second but for a desperate save from the Atherton keeper. This was followed in reasonably quick time, by a lovely angled header by Gabriel Johnson to make it really 2-0. At that stage it was all Guiseley, and thoughts of some might have turned to last Tuesday’s free-scoring goal-getting. But, then from a free kick, a lovely bending shot, went through the wall to give Atherton a foot in the game at 2-1. And, not long after that, a speculative, but well-hit shot from quite far from goal, beat the Lions’ keeper to make it all square. But, the half wasn’t finished and late on, a penalty was conceded by AC-the team in maroon- which Tom Denton put in with ease for a brace.
The second 45 minutes truthfully was not quite on this level. Though, perhaps it’s fair to say, the ones that looked most likely to score in that half was the side in white/blue. Both teams tried very hard to get the next goal, but the Lions held out to take the three points. But, not before one of the Atherton players had a rush of blood to the head with a rash and foolish challenge. Kallan Murphy who had been running down the clock more than once by taking it to a corner flag, was given one more chance to do the same with the ref most likely checking his watch in the last minute of six minute’s added time. Then a maroon shirted player who should have known better came tearing across with a fierce and reckless two-footed challenge, that could have been a leg-breaker. Uproar ensued with players pushing and shoving, before the ref finally pulled out a red card and said perpetrator had to make the walk of shame, past baying Lions’ supporters. (KM ended the game getting the MOTM award!) One wonders what the AC manager said to his offending player in the dressing room! Whatever, Guiseley got the three points, had their shooting boots firmly on again and have three wins in a row. Okay, none of these teams have been the best this division has to offer, but we need to be positive. (Can they make it four on Saturday v Stafford Rangers?)

I thought GAFC were good tonight but admittedly haven’t seen them play live for a while Could easily have scored before we did and 2-0 at 17 mins didn’t flatter us. They scored with their 2 shots but otherwise can’t really remember them troubling us. Our penalty was soft but well-taken. The second half continued a similar vein. I thought we were most likely to score and the changes were positive, Prince and Pratt neat and tidy. Kallan took a battering tonight and that final (red card) tackle was truly poor. Still for a change I agreed with the MoM (via GAFC Radio), thought the 2 Irish boys were superb tonight and Kallan fully deserving of his award So win on Saturday and hard to see how you don’t appoint Liam but does he really want it and I’m not convinced best option for either party. Liam has a long playing career and this “Caretaker-ship” will look great when he does finally decide to become a manager

Deserved win last night if we did make it hard for ourselves. First 20 mins was all Guiseley and we could easily have scored 4 goals but two was a fair return. Then they got one back through a fine free kick, but one of our supporters at that end said the free kick award was harsh. Their equaliser was from Guiseley falling a sleep at a corner which was taken short with no defender within 20 yards. Good shot through a crowd of players so Battersby won't have seen it.
Penalty was a bit harsh although there was contact so can see why it was given. And we have been on the receiving end of similar decisions so we got one our way for once.
Second half was lots of huff & puff but no more goals although I'd say Guiseley had more & the better chances.
Negative for me was the tactic over going to the corner flag to run down the clock so early. Yes understandable with a couple of mins left & you're 3-2 up, but we were doing that with over 10 mins to go (incl added time). Surely a better option is defending & hitting them on the break to potentially score a fourth & wrap things up. I'm not a fan of taking the ball to the corner flag but especially with still plenty of time to go.
Saying all that, a good 3 points & keeps the winning run going so that's all good news. Just waiting for the new manager decision now.

I know Atherton were very upset about the ball in corner thing too - seen in the red card and their childish tweets afterwards.
But we haven't been in the habit of winning games back to back for a long time now.... I don't love it, but frankly anything to get over the line and gradually build the team's confidence is fine by me right now.

We didn’t invent the ball in the corner thing. That’s been an accepted tactic of teams with narrow leads in the closing minutes of games for decades now, right? And as annoying as it is when it’s done against you, you have to accept that it’s a thing. If Atherton really have a problem with that they can’t have watched much football…

They were cross because they would have thought a game against a managerless lower table team was one to target for a result, and we didn’t give them one.

Keeping the ball in the corner should be a free kick to the opposition. Always thought that. Doubt that will ever happen.

Keeping the ball in the corner should be a free kick to the opposition. Always thought that. Doubt that will ever happen. I’ve always thought there’s a skill in keeping the ball away from your opponents in those situations without giving away a foul. Some players are better at than others of course - Murphy seems perfectly suited to it given his bloody mindedness, physical strength and ability to get kicked really hard and still keep going.

Well I really enjoyed that game. It was a million miles away from what we saw under Phillips and it was hard to believe it was the same players producing nice, intricate, intelligent build up play and crosses that actually went near to the men in the box. There was even a ball in to Denton's chest, rather than the top of his head via the moon, though still slightly more of the latter than would be ideal.
The defending left a lot to be desired, and I'd not have enjoyed it half as much if it had been against a better side, I'm sure, but if they can entertain like that, and beat enough bottom half sides to stay up, I'll be pretty contented with the season.
As for keeping the ball in the corner, I think it's fine if you can do it. I'm not sure it was the most sensible idea, given the likelihood of Atherton breaking away and scoring, but it did work and it wound them up, which is always going to help. Like other forms of timewasting, it's part of the game, and removing it makes the game more one dimensional and removes another weapon weaker teams can use against stronger. I wouldn't want to watch it all day every day but I'd rather watch a game where, say, Luton can beat Man City via clever gamesmanship and clock management, than one where City win handsomely every time because the rules have been changed to suit the way they play.

I hate that keep it in the corner stuff. How about: if the referee deems a player or players is/are shielding the ball in the corner simply to waste time he shall award a free kick for ungentlemanly conduct.

A thoroughly entertaining game of football last night and a good result too. Yes Atherton are not on a great run but we showed character to react to being pulled back level and held out for a big win to keep the good run going ahead of another home game on Saturday. We got off to a strong start and were nearly in front after five minutes when Denton's header went just wide of the mark. After 11 minutes though we got the opening goal, again it came nice and early like on Saturday. Denton continued his good form and powered the ball in after a bit of a scramble leaving the visiting keeper Buckley with no chance. No sooner was it 2-0 when Kendall's cross was headed in by Johnson as we were in complete control of the match. It turned though after 20 minutes when Ashman was harshly adjudged to have handled the ball just outside of the box, up stepped Adams to take a brilliant free kick to half the defecit. This really seemed to motivate the lowly visitors and seven minutes later they levelled the scores. A short corner eventually came out to Rydel who struck well to beat Battersby with a low shot from 25 yards out. Atherton were pushing for a third but after exchanging blows in first half injury time we got a penalty. Murphy was tripped in the box and Denton stepped up for his second penalty in three days and scored his second goal of the match to double his tally. It came at a crucial time and changed the conversation at the break. Unfortunately we lost Stacey early on, hopefully just a precaution with the winger going down near the clubhouse stand. Denton looked to have bagged his hat trick but the goal was ruled out for a foul, again it looked a litle soft with little appeal from the visitors before the ref blew his whistle. Murphy nearly extended our lead but his header went just over and Pratt forced an excellent save out of Buckley. Then as the clock ticked down Adams rushed in with a crazy tackle by the corner flag and was sent off, a rush of blood to the head. It proved to be the final flash point of an exciting game with another five goals witnessed. Well played Guiseley! Onto Stafford at home on Saturday. Come on Guiseley! AB
