LGE. GUISELEY 4 v MARINE 2 TUES. 24 OCT. 2023
Liam Tongue brought the curtain down on his time as interim manager, with an excellent decisive victory over serious promotion challengers, Marine, thus assuring he relinquished his temporary position with five victories in a row under his belt! And, he left the best till last! But, though it didn’t go smoothly from the very start with the Lions conceding the first goal, they didn’t take long to bounce back with an equaliser from Tom Pratt. And then, Gabriel Johnson put the Lions into the lead (with what would prove to be the first of a subsequent match hat-trick). However, just to confirm the old adage that ‘a football team is always most vulnerable after they’ve just scored’, Marine soon equalised after that and 2-2 is how it stayed till half time. It was a fair reflection of the play.
During the break, a call on the PA system went out for someone with football qualifications to come to the tunnel, the expectation being the person was needed to fill in for one of the match officials. A young lad sitting a few rows away from me stepped up immediately with his group of ‘supporters’ following and made his way round. He looked very confident, almost as if he’d always been waiting for ‘the call!’ I next saw him dressed in black, crossing the pitch to the grandstand side to be the assistant referee for the last 45 minutes.
In that second half, Guiseley seemed to ‘up’ their game and looked more dangerous and it wasn’t totally unexpected, though still great, to eventually see Gabriel Johnson netting to put the Lions into a 3-2 lead. Then, almost immediately he went down the pitch again and scored the third of his goals in quick time to increase the Lions’ lead to 4-2! Subs were made, GJ was given a great cheer when he went off (and fully deserved the MOTM award that was eventually announced). Truthfully, although the Liverpool side are a good team-the only one to beat Ratcliffe so far- Guiseley never looked as if they would concede twice or even once in the time left and so it proved!
Liam Tongue deserves an abundance of praise for what he has done in his short spell in charge. There is much more confidence and cohesion on the pitch, and there is also much more confidence and belief in the stands and around the pitch amongst the Lions’ fans. The new manager watching will have been greatly heartened by what he saw tonight and some of those players have laid down very positive markers for their own futures in the Guiseley squad, when he takes over. PS: Temporary assistant referee, Harry Nuttall was given an experience to remember and a big cheer, near the tunnel, as the teams and officials left the field, on a night he’ll be unlikely to ever forget either. Particular well done then.. to Liam, Gabriel and …Harry! (And, good luck to Andy…you have a tough-temporary- act to follow!)

It’s so good to enjoy going to the football again!!
Liam deserves huge credit for lifting this team and getting us playing to our strengths.
Matlock were frightening at times going forward, so to beat them by two is quite something.

Thoroughly enjoyed the game tonight. It took off as soon as we changed tactics when Tom Denton went off. Gabriel Johnson was brilliant and thoroughly deserved MOTM. But full credit to Liam Tongue in his Managerial Caretaking role. He has lifted the spirit and belief of the players and got us to 10th place in the league tonight. Thank you Liam for restoring players and supporters faith in GAFC just when we needed it most. We look forward to you getting back on the pitch soon. Over to you now Andy Welsh. Good luck and Come on You Lions 🦁

Really positive performance tonight. I thought Marine looked tremendously dangerous going forward. However I felt we attacked the game so well, full of energy and commitment. Gabriel Johnson was clinical, I thought Ible was solid, Tom Pratt full of running. Leigh Whelan impressed me too. Good atmosphere and 5 wins on the bounce! Happy days!

What a win tonight! I’d rate that as one of the best Guiseley performances in recent memory.
We beat a very good Marine team with open, attacking football, and Liam deserves our fullest praise for the job he’s done for us. Our new manager in waiting must be relishing the thought of inheriting the team he saw tonight.

Really good to see a Guiseley team playing on the front foot and with flair. Marine also played their part in what was an excellent game to watch.
Under Liam Tongue the whole atmosphere has changed for the better not just the results and he and the team deserve all the plaudits they are getting.
It’s an excellent base for Andy Welsh to inherit and say it quietly we could be in for an exciting season ahead.
Oh and well done young linesman Harry. Without whom the second half wouldn’t have been possible. If you’d been old enough I’d have bought you a pint! 😀.

What a night last night, it felt like a classic Nethermoor evening that we haven't had for a while. Two good teams playing good football at high tempo which resulted in a really entertaining match that thankfully and deservedly we came out on top of. Like a few have commented above we seemed to start slowly and Marine capitalised with an early strike by Osei from a yard out but an injury to Tom Denton and the introduction of Callum Chippendale seemed to transform the game. Not that Denton had played badly or anything it just seemed Marine couldn't cope with a change in system and we took advantage with two quickfire goals to be ahead. Tom Pratt with the first when he fired in from close range getting on the end of a Joe Stacey cross. Then just two minutes later Pratt assisted Gabriel Johnson for his first of the night in a similar fashion to Pratt's equaliser. Marine were no mugs though and two minutes later they hauled themselves back level, some neat free flowing football was ended with Soloman's strike which Battersby stood no chance with. The second half was delayed slightly following an injury picked up by one of the assistant referee's. Step forward Harry Nuttall, who had only ever refereed junior games before last night, to run the line for the second half and save the day. Again in a similar pattern to the first the second half took a bit of time to get going and then it burst into life. After a scramble in the box from Stacey's cross Johnson took full advantage of a loose ball to double his tally for the night and put his side back in front. Then just two minutes later Johnson classily back heeled the ball in from close range to put us two goals ahead for the first time, a cool finish in difficult circumstances. Again as mentioned above we defended really well and managed the game superbly to see out a strong Marine side. Ollie Brown came on for the injured Josh Ashman and slotted right back into his position and stopped several attacks from the visitors. A huge credit to Liam Tongue, Martin Foster and Kyle O'Reilly for the work they have carried out in the past few weeks, last night being the culmination of all their hard work. I am sure Andy Welsh will have been hugely impressed by what he saw and will have some difficult decisions to make for Saturday but with Kallan Murphy also available for selection but hopefully the injuries sustained by Denton and Ashman are not too serious. Well played Guiseley! Onto the Isuzu FA Trophy at Walsall Wood on Saturday. Come on Guiseley! AB

So, the announcer got the young lad’s name wrong, by calling him ‘Daniel’ Nuttall?
